Headless xboard

Post by jshriver »

A while back I was creating something similar to cutechess-cli when someone mentioned that xboard now has a headless mode.

Well I downloaded the latest source tried the -noGUI option and it's not really headless.
Rather than completely disabling the GUI front end it still displays it just doesn't update it with moves.

Is there a way to use xboard in a truly headless fashion?

I tried iceDrone, even after some tweaking to get it to compile it doesnt seem to work.

Not yet. :( The -noGUI option was provided to prevent wasting CPU time on GUI functions, and allow ultra-fast games. But it seems there also is a market for people that want to rn XBoard without an X-server. So perhaps I will extend the action of the -noGUI option in the future to that.

Nifty, I think cutechess-cli takes care of most of the needs for running two engines on the command-line. The reason I was mostly wanting a headless version was the zippy part.

Basically a working icsdrone client :) but haven't been able to get icsdrone to work and takes to much bandwidth to pipe an X app over the internet.

You can do this with Xvfb (or Xvnc). See here

Is this for FICS? In that case you can use icsdroneng.

It probably does not work for ICC.
