Hyperthreading on vs off

Post by Patishi »

Hi everyone,
I want to ask if you use hyperthreading with stockfish (or any other engine) when analyzing.
I remember that it was well known that it's better to use only the physical cores, but maybe things have changed in recent years.

Thx.

I think HT off is better. My Threadripper runs hotter when I use HT and it can even result in CPU throttling down. For a long time I ran HT because I wanted finer percentage control overy CPU usage, but now I think it was a mistake to run hyperthreads.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

Yeah, the temperature difference is substantial.

On modern CPUs with modern engines, yes when analysing or for online play. I don't have any issue with temps generally.

When running ratings lists games, absolutely not.

There was a test with TCEC hardware: 256 threads vs 512 threads. Ended 50-50.
