Hello together, hello @hgm, (How can I adress hgm in a forum post?)
I got a problem wit Xboard 4.9.1 (on Macosx) that I cannot load pgns, that have to many characters in one line.
E.g.:
https://ccrl.live/pgns/The_Great_Kiwi_H ... el_2.0.pgn
I have to download and split them manually into a couple of lines.
If this a general issue, and if yes, maybe there could be a fix for it?
It would be very very kind!
Thank you.

Hello Oliver.
I changed the value of PARSEBUFSIZE (in parser.c ) to 20 000 (instead of 10 000), and after that I could load and replay your PGN until the end.

The bug is in the pgn. According to the pgn specification a line should not exceed 255 characters:
Code: Select all
4.3: Line lengths
PGN data are organized as simple text lines without any special bytes or markers for secondary record structure imposed by specific operating systems. Import format PGN text lines are limited to having a maximum of 255 characters per line including the newline character. Lines with 80 or more printing characters are strongly discouraged because of the difficulties experienced by common text editors with long lines.
In some cases, very long tag values will require 80 or more columns, but these are relatively rare. An example of this is the "FEN" tag pair; it may have a long tag value, but this particular tag pair is only used to represent a game that doesn't start from the usual initial position.

This maybe so and I thought so, too, but this is a official pgn from CCRL.
Also, any other tool I tested, which handles pgn, could read it. Including talkchess.

Thank you, but there are even bigger pgns with all the information in one single line, where 20000 is not yet enough. For example this one (from CCRL, too).
Can you increase the BufSize to 65536? This should suffice. And will there be a new xboard version?

The bug is in the pgn. According to the pgn specification a line should not exceed 255 characters:
This maybe so and I thought so, too, but this is a official pgn from CCRL.
Also, any other tool I tested, which handles pgn, could read it. Including talkchess.
Lichess doesn't respect the 255 character per line rule either, so it seems we cannot rely on it.
Trivial example with 513 characters in one line:

Hello Oliver.
I changed the value of
PARSEBUFSIZE (in
parser.c ) to 20 000 (instead of 10 000), and after that I could load and replay your PGN until the end.
Thank you, but there are even bigger pgns with all the information in one single line, where 20000 is not yet enough. For example this one (from CCRL, too).
Can you increase the BufSize to 65536? This should suffice. And will there be a new xboard version?
Wouldn't it be easier and more complete to just let the GUI break the line into parts? There is no real reason to treat a '\n' differently
from a ' ' in the part that lists the moves of the game.
For example, read at most the first 200 characters of a line, then continue until the next space character (or newline) and break the line there. Problem solved.

As was already pointed out, technically speaking, this data doesn't conform to the PGN specification as authored by Steven J. Edwards. That said, there are other similar examples where implementing code is sometimes more lenient. For instance, PGN was defined to use a character set that is a subset of ISO 8859-1: that restriction is not always adhered to either. And given that SJE isn't around anymore, and there's no active formal mechanism for the continued evolution of PGN in place today, implementations will often choose to be generous in accepting "near-PGN".
H.G. Muller and Tim Mann and I have had some private email correspondence during 2025 regarding getting a new version of GNU XBoard (both for Unix and Windows) prepared and released. While I cannot yet say precisely when a new version will actually be released, it is clear to me that increasing the buffer size would be a relatively trivial change, so I would be happy to increase it for the next version. Nonetheless, I would also request that people file bug reports against software that is generating such large single lines of PGN, because particularly in some embedded computing contexts (e.g., electronic chess board hardware that people can use to play online with while using a physical board and set), it isn't reasonable to presume that even a 64K line of near-PGN will actually be properly processed.
By the way,
https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/bug-xboard is the official way to file bug reports about GNU XBoard. It hasn't been active lately, but I think that's partly because 4.9.1 was released quite a long time ago.

Of course, but who does it? Xboard cannot do it and I have to do it "manually" with vi each time.

Yes, I know and I thought so, too.
But CCRL hosts ten thousands of PGN files that don't conform to the PGN specification as authored by Steven J. Edwards.
LiChess, too, hosts even much more than thousands of PGN files with the same issue.
Maybe there are more.
Now what does this information actually help? Can we complain to CCRL and LiChess about their faulty PGN-files and they change it? Also that they correct all existing pgn-files?
This raises actually another question: Why I am the only one who actually cares since the release of 4.9.1?
