Halogen 13 Windows Binary broken

Post by pohl4711 »

Halogen 13 Windows avx2 Binary is broken. When I try to do a testrun of Halogen 13 (26 games simultaneousy, cutechess-cli, singlethread), it first gives warnings (illegal ponder move), then makes illegal moves, then crashes.

Perhaps Jim Ablett can do it better (and do an avx512 binary, too) ?!

Hi, Halogen author here :D

Sorry about that, can I ask for some more info and I’ll try to track down the issue for you?

1. It sounds like you tried to test Halogen with pondering on? Halogen doesn’t support pondering so please try to test it without pondering enabled

2. Can you provide some info about your system? What windows version are you using? If you run cutechess with -debug flag can you share the output with me?

Thanks, Kieren

Sorry for me being stupid: I meant illegal pv-moves, not ponder-moves. Sorry. (I do not use ponder and in cutechess-cli, ponder is false per default).

The output of -debug is unreadable (huge and chaotic) and the errors do not start with the first moves, but some seconds later (then, the output is already a textfile of 600 or more Kilobytes!)

My testing-conditions from my Website:
Hardware: AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX 16-core (32 threads) notebook with 64GB RAM (since 2024/10/08), 2 identical machines. Windows 11 64bit
Speed: (singlethread, TurboBoost-mode switched off, chess starting position) Stockfish 17: 600 kn/s (when 26 games are running simultaneously)
Hash: 512MB per engine
GUI: Cutechess-cli (GUI ends game, when a 5-piece endgame is on the board, all other games are played until mate or draw by chess-rules (3fold, 50-moves, stalemate))
Tablebases: None for engines, 5 Syzygy for cutechess-cli
Openings: My UHO_2022_6mvs_+120_+129 openings are used (first 500 lines) (UHO 2022 openings are part of my Anti Draw Openings download-package).
Ponder, Large Memory Pages & learning: Off

If you can fix the bug, I would appreciate an avx512 Windows binary, these run a little bit faster on my machines.

The same issue, so far every game finishes with illegal move, just in two moves after the end of the opening. I am using Banksia.
Tested avx2 and avx2-pext
Hash 64mb, ponder off

Hi, thanks for reporting this. I've fixed the issue and updated the binaries attached to the v13 release. The fixed binaries will display 'Halogen 13.0.1' on start-up. Please let me know if you have any further troubles and thanks for using Halogen :D

Testrun started with avx512 binary. First 20 games without any problems - so the bug seems fixed. Result in 4 days.

Hi, Kieren. Why is it marked as pre-release?

Hi, don’t worry about the pre-release. I’ve updated the binaries attached to the main ‘Halogen 13’ release to include the fix found here :D : https://github.com/KierenP/Halogen/releases/tag/v13
