There is also something in the air in Gutweiler, Germany. In this great direction, everyone know. 600 people living her, different PCs with a lot of chess software living here too. All are from me, think so.
Stockfish lost its huge lead. So many other engines used all the good known ideas today. But fact is, since many years the most powerfull project in computerchess after Wasp. For sure very very important for all the chess PCs in Gutweiler!

Good luck with the next Stockfish release!

"Stockfish lost its huge lead." Correct. In CCRL 40/15 there are 15 programs inside 50 points from SF! Real elo, no UHO.

Re: New Offical Stockfish On The Way?
Hi Jouni,
I made a small test with older Number 1 Engines vs. Stockfish.
Games stopped after move 40 with an equal FEOBOS spezial database with 100 start positions.
So I am looking how strong older number 1 engines can play vs. Stockfish.
A complicated database because I have to evaluate the results.
Do it with Excel and different criteria.
Results are interesting!
Hiarcs is on position 1 but most surprising is what Junior can do. I think Junior have the most interesting ideas.
A bit surprising because Gandalf is on place three only.
Last place for ChessTiger, in the near is Fritz.
Today we have a lot of possibilites to do a little bit with all the available software from the last years.
Best
Frank
PS: If I evalutate results after move 30 ... Junior is on place 1 and Gandalf on place 2. Hiarcs on three only. Most boring what Shredder and Ruffian are playing for the first 30 moves. To many moves without a goal. Rybka is not in the test, too many fast loses ... to evaluate this is to complicated. Interesting is that ChessTiger lost 95% of games very creeping. No big mistakes but to often the second or third best move. Engine with most blunders is "Shredder". Nimzo is in the middle of the field, very unspectacular the style vs. Stockfish. Again, most interesting is Junior and Hiarcs and what Gandalf is doing for get open lines.

Best middlegame for Hiarcs I think ... maybe the engine with the best chess knowledge.
Best aggressiveness for Junior I think.
Most ambivalent is Gandalf.
So I am thinking ...
To made the same test vs. only this three engines from the past vs. other top engines from today can be interesting to learn more about openings, playing styles of current engines.
At the moment I collected 16 current engines from 3100 - 3500 Elo where I am thinking the differents in playing style are really big. Very interesting for further engine tourneys. Much more interesting as looking in tourneys from TOP-20, TOP-30, TOP-40 engines.
Fact is that Stockfish is for every test the best reference for me.

I wonder how much copy-paste hides in those ideas. It seems to me that nowadays the only important thing is that the engines have original networks, nobody inspects the code.Frank Quisinsky wrote: ↑Thu Mar 20, 2025 7:19 pm Stockfish lost its huge lead. Think so Gabor,
interesting is the way the Patricia programmer is going.
Most nice development at the moment for myself from engines I am looking more in detail. To many interesting engines today, if I am looking in newer engines I found this and that what is interesting but I have not the time for looking in all of the enignes.
The programmer of Patricia builds more and more own knowledge. Maybe more as others with the way he is going.
The problem is this need time and for sure more as 90% of his results goes in the basket.
End of the day are the 10% crucial for building such a special engine.

Weiss is very interesting.
I think the programmer is full of chess knowledge after his way of development. Since a long time I test Weiss vs. Aristarch, Fizbo and Wasp. Weiss is a strategic monster and really better from dev to dev.
Very interesting to follow the development of Weiss, good that Jim make from time to time a new compile. Have here a lot of fun with computer chess.
Have a nice day Gabor!
Programmers of Hiarcs, Weiss and Patricia should build a team.
