There were not so many participants this time, there used to be twice as much in the past, I assume some people are still on vacation.

Belfish won the tournament with 6.5 points out of 9.
NightmareX, CSTalX, ArasanX and WaspX managed to get 6 points, with a performance rating also very close to each other.
Goldbar, Marvin, Rebel and WaDuuttie managed to get 5.5 points.

It is possible that Rebel lost a game because he was observing other games with the same account that he used to play in the tournament.

Indeed.

In a previous tournament I did not participate but watched the games of Chris. I wasn't aware you have to turn that off when playing yourself, quite an expensive lesson.

BTW, should you have own engine on "OFF" or "ON" wirh "follow"?
90% of coding is debugging, the other 10% is writing bugs.

It doesn't matter, I never experienced any problem when using "follow" or "observe" with my engine "ON", only when the engine starts playing it messes things up. Of course this is a software problem, either a problem in the server or in the GUI. The server source is 20 years old, written in such a way that it is almost impossible to maintain, I don't want to spend time on it.

It is a client problem. The server just sends all new positions of all games you are playing or observing, labeling them with the game number. But WinBoard normally feeds all such board and preceding moves to the engine, in zippy mode. You can prevent that by setting WinBoard to 'background observe' mode. Then it just stores observed boards in the background, and only shows them when you press the right mouse button. Or you can also switch to 'dual board' mode, to see the played and observed game side by side.

These features were added mainly for the benefit of bughouse, where it is important to keep an eye on your partner's game.

Skipper doing much better. 18th spot. Never ended so high. Maybe in the future it gets to top ten. Who knows.

At least it plays without problems. It is just a matter of time to improve your engine.

If the number of participants drops below a certain point, we'll probably stop with this tournament all together.
Nowadays most people seem to have more interest in tournaments like TCEC and CCC, and I can't blame them.

Ok then better not hope Skipper gets to top ten.

That would be a shame because it’s the only engine authors tournament there is. Monthly gives a target to aim at.

I have a tentative theory that the newer recent engines are done by people more interested in the software engineering than in the chess, so individual games and so on are not so interesting to them.

I thought Arasan-Wasp was an interesting game. I don't always watch these live online but I was watching this one.

It was a typical unbalanced Gruenfeld. I thought Black was better for a good part of the game. The pawn on the 7th rank was concerning. But Arasan eventually sacrificed the exchange, and the resulting endgame was a draw.
