I cannot speak directly to the file you're referencing, but generally speaking Antivirus programs these days flag files using heuristics and machine-learning models that are trained to recognize certain patterns or behaviors. I often have my own executables incorrectly quarantined and here are things that contribute:

1. The binary is unsigned
2. CPU pinning, large chunks of memory allocated, just like a cryptominer malware program might be.
3. Code for chess is relatively rare. We optimize low-level CPU instructions aggressively. We flip bits. Just like a virus might.
4. We embed large binary data inside the executable just like a virus might.

That said, if you downloaded the .exe file from an untrusted source.... it might still be a virus. Good luck!

That's a handy website - thank you!
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory

In short, it could be a false positive or a virus...
Nothing I didn’t already know (and it doesn’t answer the question)

This engine (a derivative of Reckless) has been around for a while (this isn't the first version I've used). The programmer (from South Africa) has interesting ideas. This engine competes in the Chess.com Computer Chess Championship and the Top Chess Engine Championship. The questions I put to ChatGPT and Gemini AI were specific (regarding the engine), not general (about GitHub). Everyone makes their own choices!
