Czubatronic 2400 released: Thorsten Czub’s Capa plays at last

Post by Chessgate »

DCS Analytics, the makers of ChessGate / PlayChessGate and the LineaChess Chess Analysis Suite, have released a new computer-chess project: the Czubatronic 2400.

At its heart is something rather special: Capa, Thorsten Czub’s own chess engine, is being released publicly for the first time.

Thorsten has been part of the computer-chess world for more than four decades — as a player, collector, tester, writer, consultant and programmer. Capa grew out of that history. Named after Capablanca, it began as Thorsten’s personal chess-programming laboratory and followed him through several generations of computers before eventually reaching the PC.

Development resumed in 2026. The original program has since gained UCI support and a substantially modernised search, while retaining much of its old character: twelve levels, permanent brain, the original interface and even Capa’s sometimes rather unconventional comments to its opponent.

Rather than simply release the engine as another executable, we decided to build a home for it.

The Czubatronic 2400 is a complete chess application inspired by the dedicated chess computers of the 1980s and 1990s and dedicated to Thorsten’s long involvement in computer chess. Capa sits at its centre, accompanied by several other engines for playing, testing and experimenting.

It isn't an attempt to compete with today's strongest engines. It is something rather different: a new chess computer built around a program with a history, an author and a personality of its own.

And after all these years, everybody can finally play against Capa.

Great interface and Capa is a really nice engine to play against.
As Thorsten has and had a great connection with most of the computer chess programmers over many years, it's a pity that we can't also load and play against all the hundreds of chess computer ROMS available, which would have been a nice option.

I know that Thorsten as I've used it for many years but it still would have been nice to play against all the ROMS on the new Czubatronic 2400 software.

Thanks for the new version.

As AdminX already mentioned, the installer and the application work perfectly on Linux. I would love to use it at work (on Windows) as well, but I'm not allowed to run an installer. Could you consider creating a portable version (in a ZIP file)?

I fogot to say that the project name is very fun. :)
