Problem: when an extra bishop harms.

Post by Ajedrecista »

Hello:

Less is more, sometimes: I composed a simple problem involving zugzwangs and limited moves by the losing side. I usually check YACPDB and PDB, but PDB needs account and login since 20th July, 2026... I am not in the mood of register, so I lose PDB's excellent search options of POSITION and SOL (solution). There might be other similar problems, but I did not found anything.

The problem is easy for SF and Chest, so please do not expect a true challenge. It is instructive to see how the extra black bishop avoids black's king to defend from the back rank, which proves devastating and white makes use of a waiting move in order to create zugzwangs and capture the knight on the rim (is dim → here, is doomed) and the house of cards falls:

[Result "1-0"]
[PlyCount "39"]

1.Kh2 Kh6 2.Kg1 Kh5 3.Kf2 Kh6 4.Ke3 Kh5 5.Ke4 Kh6 6.Ke5 Kh5 7.Kd6 Kh6 8.Ke7 Kh5 9.Ke8 ({(The waiting move. 9.Kf8 also wins, but is slower because 9...Kh6 temporarily avoids the white's king to go to g8, must come back and triangulate)}) Bg8 10.Kf8 Bh7 11.Kg7 Bg8 12.Kxg8 Kh6 13.Kxh8 Kh5 14.Kg8 (14.Kg7? 1/2-1/2 {(Draw by stalemate)}) Kh6 15.Kxf7 Kh7 16.Ke7 Kg8 17.f7+ Kg7 18.f8=R (18.f8=Q+ Kh7 19.Qf1 Kg7 20.Qh1 Kg8 21.Kf6 Kf8 22.Qh8# 1-0) Kh6 19.Rf7 Kh5 Rh7# 1-0[/pgn]

A nice side effect is that the underpromotion to rook checkmates two moves faster than the usual promotion to queen due to stalemate threats that must be avoided.

------------

The problem admits variants. The drawn position without the bishop can be blundered subtly by both sides, exploiting diagonal opposition advantages:

tested it with some free engines and I am surprised to see that the problem is hard for some engines:

Fruit2.1 get the maximal depth (depth 63) but still get a draw score
Senpai3.01 also get the maximal depth(depth 99) in less than a second but also get a score that is close to draw.
obsidian16.14 got depth 123 in less than a second but it did not help it to find a mate score and the score was still 0.00
Velvet7_3 got depth 127 in less than a second and even this depth did not help it to get a score of more than 0.00
weaker yace could find mate in 20 in less than a second at depth 35 and of course many engines can find it but the surprise is that many engines do not find it including some strong NNUE engines.

The black move 9...Bg8 should come a couple of moves earlier - then it can be defended by putting the king on h7, making the capture of the bishop more difficult.

That was my point all along.

Humans will always have an eye for solving problems that artificial intelligence will never be able to solve, maybe even not in a million years from now when the technology is more advanced.

@Uri: what a great, unexpected surprise! There are many times that old engines find this kind of checkmates in few time. OTOH, I fooled Fruit, Senpai and Obsidian without intending. The problem might not be as easy as I firstly thought, after all.

@Graham: I disagree if I understood you about playing 7.- ..., Bg8 instead of 9.- ..., Bg8 (FEN "7n/5p1b/3K1Pp1/6pk/6p1/6P1/6P1/8 b - - 13 7" and black plays 7.- ..., Bg8 instead of 7.- ..., Kh6). I attach the new PGN from the start, to compare the number of moves:

[pgn][Event ""]
[Site ""]
[Round ""]
[Date "2026.07.31"]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "7n/5p1b/5Pp1/6pk/6p1/6PK/6P1/8 w - - 0 1"]
[Result "1-0"]
[PlyCount "37"]

1.Kh2 Kh6 2.Kg1 Kh5 3.Kf2 Kh6 4.Ke3 Kh5 5.Ke4 Kh6 6.Ke5 Kh5 7.Kd6 Bg8 ({(7...Kh6 holds the same number of moves)}) 8.Ke7 Kh6 9.Ke8 Kh7 ({(9...Bh7 and 9...Kh5 hold one move more)}) 10.Kf8 Kh6 11.Kxg8 Kh5 12.Kxh8 Kh6 13.Kg8 Kh5 14.Kxf7 Kh6 15.Kg8 Kh5 16.f7 Kh6 17.f8=R Kh5 18.Rf1 Kh6 19.Rh1# 1-0[/pgn]

The plan of setup Bg8 and Kh7 loses one move faster because that setup can not last more than one move (black can only move the king or the bishop, nothing more, so they can not stay there and wait). Again, 9.- Ke8 is faster than the greedy 9.- Kf8. In this side line, both f8=Q and f8=R checkmate in the same number of moves.

@Uri: 'a million years from now' looks excessive. Who knows if humans are still a thing on the Earth? The stall of technology reminds me the myth of 'Everything that can be invented has been invented'.

Yes - you're absolutely right. Once the white king is on e7, it will win the zugzwang because it can either go to f8 and attack the bishop or it can go to e8 and bypass a move.

Hello:

I tried to add more pieces to the position and looks like my copy of SF 18 gets fooled in my modest hardware and does not see the plan. There can be other winning plans, but probably not that faster like the original:

I annotated some traps in the PGN (stalemates, a black win...). Analysis by SF 18:

There were 2,816,733 TB hits to the full set of 3, 4 and 5-man Syzygy EGTB.

SF 18 is blind to the sideline of 1.- Qxg4+, Kh6 and only evaluate 2.- Kh2 as winning after playing that. It favours 1.- Qe3 instead going all-in with 1.- Qxg4+. Then, both 1.- ..., fxg4+ (resulting in the same position than the OP, plus a black pawn on e4) and 1.- ..., Kh6 result in the same checkmate (lenght-wise):

Chest 5.2 could not solve the position, either. Might be a shorter checkmate than the 'straight' #22, using the power of the queen?

Any insights are welcome.

tried stockfish from 26.7 with multi-pv

got the following analysis that suggest to investigate Qe2 and Qd1 as alternatives but Qxg4+ is best from depth 22:

This seems to be too optimistic.

After the first two half-moves, Qxg4+ fxg4+, Matefish can't find a Mate in 21.

Code: Select all

info string Failure! No mate in 21 found!
info time 3254 multipv 1 depth 41 seldepth 41 nodes 12642561 nps 3885236 hashfull 13 tbhits 0 score cp 0 pv h3h2
bestmove h3h2
But it does confirm a Mate in 22:

Code: Select all

info string Success! Mate in 22 found!
info time 11374 multipv 1 depth 43 seldepth 43 nodes 42112165 nps 3702493 hashfull 43 tbhits 0 score mate 22 pv h3h2 h7g8 h2g1 g8h7 g1f2 e4e3 f2e3 h7g8 e3e2 g8h7 e2d3 h7g8 d3e4 g8h7 e4e5 h7g8 e5d6 g8h7 d6e7 h7g8 e7f8 g8h7 f8g7 h7g8 g7g8 h5h6 g8h8 h6h5 h8g8 h5h6 g8f7 h6h5 f7e6 h5h6 f6f7 h6h5 f7f8r h5h6 f8g8 h6h7 e6f7 h7h6 g8h8

Pushing the pawn immediately after Kh3-h2 doesn't seem to be the best play for Black.

Hmm, maybe I need to take a closer look at Matefish again.

Huntsman also confirms the Mate in 22.
