Belyavsky's deflection.

Post by Ajedrecista »

Hello:

I found by chance a very nice problem of 2008 by Albert Mijailovich Belyavsky:

There is a variant without the black pawn on a7. The move 3.- Rg8!! is the deflection itself. Black is not complelled to play the natural-looking 3.- ..., Qxg8 that leads to a fireworks checkmate, but anyway 3.- Rg8!! has got higher evals than 3.- Rxd8 for SF 18 after playing it with Multi-PV disabled; otherwise, SF gets stuck with 3.- Rxd8:

[d]3q3R/p2r1p2/2N1nk1K/3rp3/8/5PP1/8/1Q1N4 w - - 1 3

My open question is: can any engine play 3.- Rg8!! with Multi-PV disabled and without external help? I would be satisfied even if analysing after 2.- Kf6, let alone from the start of the problem... even for the variant without the a7-pawn. I expect that SF finally cracks this hard nut with more cores, hash and time. Thank you in advance.

Regards from Spain.

Hi Ajedrecista, thanks for all the chess stuff from you in here! I have not really looked deeply at the study, just tried to see if some engine can solve it.

I tried two engines and they both solved it given the position after 2...Kf6.

So if SF gets stuck here it just shows it could be improved for analysis I think, especially if allowed multiple threads. For instance a simple setup with the cluster version of Stockfish on very low level hardware would be a great solver, in theory, because the Multi PV, as far as I understand, comes naturally to the cluster architecture, (the hash is split between the different computers etc. ) But I don't know anyone who does that, at least not here?

Well anyway, you can use the Multi PV and the engine I tried first uses some of that code too as we know, so it really does not qualify as not Multi PV... Lately I think Eduard has removed the randomization code in his latest work after the exchange with Corchess developer on Open Chess. So I have not tried that one, maybe the randomization is removed but the multi PV inside is still there. Fine, as long as you know that when using it.

But this was (pretty old) SUN SE I tried, modified SF from Eduard Nemeth :

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

but there is 8.Qf6(?) =, your 8.Qg5 instead should win indeed, even if not as quickly and not as beautifully as main line does.

Hi Jesus,

To answer your open question, Stockfish 18 using 64 threads and a 32GB hashtable does indeed see the 3.Rg8! move after 44 seconds and ShashChess 33.1 takes less than 1 second on the same computer:
