Chess grandmaster Jan Timman (74) has passed away. He was ill for a long time.
For many years, Timman was the best chess player in the Netherlands, reaching second place in the world rankings in 1982. He was considered „The Best of the West“ among the strong Russians Anatoly Karpov, Boris Spassky and Garry Kasparov.
Timman became a grandmaster at the age of 23 and won nine national titles. He won the Hoogovens tournament twice and was allowed to face Karpov for the world title in 1993 after Kasparov and Nigel Short decided to play their match outside the World Chess Federation. Karpov won 12.5:8.5. Timman made his comeback in 2024 after 18 years and ended his career in 2025.

Re: Jan Timman ist gestorben.
Back in the day, he was widely known. I remember him.
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory
