For me there are two metrics by which you can measure whether an engine is improving: a) when the engine does better against other engines (Elo increases) or b) when it solves more difficult positions or solves them faster. I would be fine with the depth-limited search to fail on a few more puzzles due to the thinner tree as long as the time-limited search still gets roughly the same amount right as the prior version. But with my very aggressive futility pruning (that gave +20 Elo in a gauntlet) this was no longer the case. So is it an improvement or a regression? I don't know how to feel about that so I'd rather not go forward with it...j.t. wrote: ↑Sat Feb 04, 2023 11:37 am Don't you have a similar problem quite generally every time you stop the search before the game is over? The futility pruning just cuts the tree at specifically the nodes, which are statistically less likely to be in any PV, in exchange for more search depth for lines that probably matter.

Re: Devlog of Leorik
Hi, sorry for my not so clear reply. What I meant was to reduce the bad captures relative to the good or equal captures.lithander wrote: ↑Sat Feb 04, 2023 2:39 amj.t. wrote: ↑Sun Jan 29, 2023 4:22 am One thing you could try is not only skipping moves for which the futility margin is big enough, but also reducing the depth for moves by the amount that would still be allowed. E.g. if a specific position would be skipped because of its bad static eval when at depth 4, but not when at depth 5, then instead of not skipping when at depth 5, you could reduce the search to depth 1.Currently I'm not reducing bad captures at all. In QSearch I skip them completely and otherwise all captures are MVV-LVA sorted but otherwise treated the same. But what both of you suggest makes sense: I should probably just reduce but not skip moves entirely.Pio wrote: ↑Mon Jan 30, 2023 11:30 pm I would try to reduce bad captures less at higher depths (closer to the root) for two reasons. Firstly it would reduce the branching factor having bad captures reduced less at higher depths than lower depths since you will simplify the position quicker and on average reducing the number of legal moves. Secondly it won’t matter so much reducing the bad captures more closer to the leafs (low depth) since the horizon is too close to probably make the move look good before returning.
By now I have spent a dozen hours on the problem described in the last post. I was trying different ways of computing the futility-margin to retain some of the performance gains of the aggressively pruning version without losing too much accuracy on the WAC test set. I've tried lookup tables for the margins based on the remaining depth (plies yet to search). I tried polynomials of the form margin(ply) = a * ply^2 + b * ply + c
To help me tune the margin formula I compiled a version that does not prune but instead logs to console whenever it would have mispredicted and pruned erroneously. The resulting log looks scary. A careful selection of margins and preconditions (no checks, no mate-score, not in endgame, only when <X plies remaining...) can only attempt to minimize the damage but won't make it entirely safe. And the nodes-to-depth quickly increase with every safety measure until the entire endeavor is no longer worth it.
What I realized only through these experiments: Any reasonable margin would still be capable of missing some really good moves: a mate in one just because the move before checkmate results in a position that doesn't beat alpha when statically evaluated! Or it misjudges the situation because it's not aware of 3-fold repetitions. Or it could have returned a better value for the move from the transposition table but it never looked it up. So many ways where this could be wrong... and only the fact that you search a thinner tree to a deeper depth makes it a potentially winning trade. But how many blunders will it cause? Is it still a net-win at the long timecontrols of tournaments?
I'm tempted to remove it entirely and live with the ensuing Elo loss.
I guess you look twice as deep on captures as the quiet moves. I would try almost the same for bad captures far from the leafs, i.e look twice as deep on the bad captures as the quiet moves. The reason is that the bad captures will more or less still force the opponents to recapture so it will reduce the branching factor to almost the same as the better captures. Later, on the same branch, the position might be so good or bad (depending on how you view it) so null move pruning will still remove most of the work for the branch with bad capture if it doesn’t improve.
I have not implemented this in my engine, but will try it later on.
I am looking forward for more posts from your engine development thread
Good luck!

Re: Devlog of Leorik
I ended my last devlog post saying:
I looked what would happen to nodes that have a static evaluation below alpha + futility_margin if I didn't prune them. Of course what's bad for one side (below alpha) is good for the other side (above beta) and so the move would be eligible for null-move pruning. My null-move pruning would only reduce by depth=2 and so it was relying on the futility pruning to filter out the most obvious positions to be most effective. But I thought I could just combine the two by increasing the depth reduction of null-moves to 4. Quick tests suggested that Leoriks accuracy didn't suffer much from that increase and embolden by that I also added some early out based on the static evaluation of the position.
The combined result was that the tree was almost as thin as when I was using futility pruning at all depths (instead of just close to the leaves) while the accuracy of the engine on puzzle positions remained high. What was bothering me about the futility pruning is that the higher the remaining depth the less I could be sure that pruning based the static eval was sound. But here it's different: the pruning based on static eval only happens for nodes that would, after applying the null move reduction of 4, drop right into QSearch.
And the code got a simpler, too, which I always appreciate. It's not Minimal-Chess but my personal preferences haven't changed.
Now I'm considering to release a version 2.4 soon to see if what seemed to work well in my own tests also makes Leorik play better in the upcoming Amateur Series Division! I don't expect a huge Elo boost since I didn't touch the eval at all, but in my internal gauntlet the version 2.4 candidate achieves 2780 Elo where 2.3 was sitting at 2740. Most of it was gained through using SEE in Qsearch, but merging futility-pruning and null-move pruning is giving me ~15Elo over the old implementation. That would be enough of an improvement to justify a minor version increment, I guess.
...and since then I made a serious attempt at doing just that.

{
if (remaining < 6 && eval > beta + _options.NullMoveCutoff)

next.PlayNullMove(current);

Re: Devlog of Leorik
I tried that idea this weekend. Added one 15x15x2 table per piece type. (seperate values for midgame and endgame) The relative distance from the king as a 2D vector in the range [-7..7, -7...7] is used to lookup individual entries. The values are added to the material value of the piece as a modifier. I tried both using the opponent king as a reference (to learn how to position pieces to best attack the opponent) and the same-side king (to learn how to position pieces to protect your own king) and while the trained tables seemed to make some sense, intuitively, and seemed to encode things like using a pawn shield in front of the king or having a rook on the last rank to protect the king it didn't brought any significant strength increase in actual play. Not even in node-limitted tests where the speed of my implementation does not matter at all. Usually when trying new features you have a small Elo win in node-limitted play and the challenge is then not to lose it due to the extra time-cost of computing the more complex evaluation.Mike Sherwin wrote: ↑Tue Dec 27, 2022 7:02 pm A full size NN also incorporates the square the kings are on. This may be done in Leorik by using 15x15 piece square tables where the king is always in the center. Then the pst is still used as an 8x8 table by pointing to the cell in the 15x15 table that places the kings on the 8x8 table at its current square. Jonathan tried this idea in Winter but only got positive result for the bishop table. Still it was worth +20 elo!
But I didn't even get to that point, sadly!
It might be that I need a lot more data and that the result suffered from over-fitting a lot. Yet another idea that sounded nice but that I couldn't get to work. I'm slowly getting used to it!

Re: Devlog of Leorik
I didn't manage to release a version in time for the 99th amateur series after all. But I'm very grateful for the many opportunities to play that Graham and other testers have given Leorik recently:
99th Amateur Series Division 7
Rookie Raiders v Nawito Nailers (Teams Match)
Lozza Larrikins v Colossus Crunchers (Teams Match)
CEGT blitz list: Leorik 2.3 at 1874 Elo (+53 to v. 2.2)
Carlos777 Blitz Tournament 3'+2" Promo League 1
Many thanks for that! That's what fuels my continued work on the engine!
Speaking of which... I have returned to my original plan to leave the evaluation alone and focus on improving the search only for the next release. The biggest Elo gainer since 2.3 was using SEE in QSearch and I'm currently exploring opportunities to use it in the main search. Another thing I have briefly tried and that looked promising is to record a history for captures too and when a capture has a positive history it's slotted infront of the MVVLVA sorted remaining captures. But the code was too hacky and I didn't spent enough time on testing so I didn't commit anything and marked it for a proper revisit at a later time. Now my goal is to keep fiddling with the engine until I can be pretty confident about breaking the 2800 Elo barrier with the next release.

Re: Devlog of Leorik - *New* Version 2.4
I just released Version 2.4 of Leorik!
The new version keeps the evaluation of version 2.3 but features an improved the search. The most notable addition is the use of a Static-Exchange-Evaluation (SEE) to skip bad captures in Quiescence search and to search moves with a bad SEE score at a reduced depth in the main search. This new version also includes a nice simplification: I removed Futility Pruning and made Null-Move Pruning the only remaining place where entire branches can be pruned because they are just 'too good' for one side. Futility pruning relied on the static evaluation of a position and didn't explore it further if this evaluation was way below alpha. I now use the same idea in my null-move pruning implementation: When a position's static evaluation is way above beta and close to the leaves then Leorik just returns beta without further evaluation.
Last but not least Leorik now recognizes certain drawn positions with a material advantage for one side (e.g. KvKNN) and evaluates them much closer to zero.
The playing strength of Version 2.4 should be around 2800 Elo. This estimate is based on a gauntlet against a few other engines at 40/30 time control. I hope it will not do much worse on the rating lists!

At some point I'll have to add some dedicated Anti-Mike-Sherwin code where I give moves that capture pawns on Leorik's side of the board a few cp bonus!

I'm serious! For example move 16. Rf2... if I feed that FEN to Leorik 2.4 and let it search it it wants to play fxg4 for the first 90 seconds and then switches to Rf2 only at depth 22. At the next search iteration it's fxg4 again. WHY? :/

Re: Devlog of Leorik
When I tried against 2.3 I was not feeling very well and 2.3 destroyed me like three games in a row so I gave up trying. Today I feel the best I have felt in a long time so I decided to try against 2.4. I was not expecting it to be as easy as it was. I actually used to play the exchange variation of the Ruy as white and the line played was a must know. The only pressure that I felt in this game was, 'did I blunder allowing WQ on h8 and WR on D8'. I was not sure if I saw everything correctly. Is it getting more difficult? I think it is but not in this game because I knew well how to attack white's king position. Leorik being un-knowledgeable about strategic plans makes it vulnerable to a good plan. But that is what makes it fun to play!
Also in some positions there is even odd polarity in the search. When you see two moves being swapped back and forth even once it has to do with even odd polarity and the horizon effect.

Re: Devlog of Leorik
It is on the CCRL Blitz list already, just made the cut-off, however judging by the average opponent Elo it is much stronger than the tester anticipated! It will require more games against stronger opponents.
