The latest CCRL update (1st August 2025)

Post by Graham Banks »

The latest CCRL Rating Lists and Statistics (1st August) are available for viewing from the following links:

www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040 (40/15 and 15m+10s)
www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404 (BLITZ 2m+1s)
www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/402.archive/ (BLITZ 40/2 Archive)
www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404FRC (FRC 40/2)
www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/Chess324/ (Chess324)

Our 40 moves in 15 minutes repeating (including 15 minutes with 10 second increments) and 2 minutes with 1 second increments are both adjusted to the Intel i7 4770k (3.5GHz) using the Stockfish 10 64-bit benchmark.
All of our current testing uses AVX2 compiles where available.

Be aware that in the early stages of testing, an engine's rating can often fluctuate a lot.

It is strongly advised to look at the many other rating lists available in order to get a more accurate overall picture of an engine's rating relative to others.

The inclusion or exclusion of engines in our lists should not be taken as our group making a statement about their legality or status. Where there is controversy, it is usually mentioned in the engine notes.

Thanks to:
- Kirill Kryukov who wrote the scripts that produce all CCRL data, with recent processing speed-ups from Martin Sedlak (Cheng author).
- all of our currently active testers (Graham, Gabor, Basti, Shaun, Andres and Matt).
- Ray Banks who ran the time-consuming weekly updates for a very long time, a task now shared among three testers.
- Jay Honnold for both the tournament viewer and for hosting Graham's live broadcasts.
- Jonathan Gilchrist for the utility CCRL notifier, which alerts engine authors when their engine is playing in a live broadcast.
- Anton Mihailov (Chessdom.com) for hosting our rating lists for many years.
- Sam Roelants (Simbelmyne author) who has taken over the hosting of our rating lists.
- all engine authors. Without you, CCRL wouldn't exist.

40/15 and 15m+10s testing this week will include (thanks to Graham, Andres and Shaun. Live broadcast given where applicable):

Live broadcasts of some Gauntlets can be made available upon request.

Hi Graham,

Testing following http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404 report reveals some issues.

1) details link on engines break, as far as I know, it's been a while when they stopped working

2) my engine is gradually losing some points, only 5 or so every few months, while it is still the same version

This is not an issue per se but it means that the complete elo pyramid seems to influenced by higher ranking engines to be introduced at the top eating elo from the engines below.
This could mean that the same elo today actually means more elo than it does. Maybe add a top ranking statistically next to each engine to capture that moment in the past.

In the custom comparision you can choose any historical rating to compare to. Here I selected single CPU engines, and the 4th January 2025 list. It is a great feature that Kirill built into the website. Next to the current Elo rating it shows the movement.
(However sometimes it doesn't work due to the generated URL being too long)

And you see the text in the top section

That blitz list only started in 2020 so going back too far could be a bit meaningless because the list was still building up. The 4015 list is almost 20 years old, so for that you could choose a comparison from say 10 years ago, and for old engines that have not had new versions you could get something meaningful that shows the movement. Unfortunately I see that that website is currently broken.

Thanks, it shows indeed largely negative evolution below 1600 elo, largely positive evolution around 2700 elo and above again a small negative evolution. Curious to see the origin of movement. If it were consistent, it would be easy to find... but it is not.
