Re: ChessAssistant under Linux with wine
I do.
You have to use the CD version of chess assistant. I actually got the download version first, but Convekta gave me the CD version for free after I pointed out that the previous CD version works fine on wine but not the download version. In fact, I was even able to show why the download version of Chess Assistant does not work under wine and they agreed to upgrade their library when they get a chance.
Other than that the installation was straightforward with a few differences:
1. Install only the program when using linux otherwise there could be an issue when moving to the next CD.
2. You can always copy databases and other files after you do the light install.
3. The cd protection check and patch should work fine with recent wine versions when using the provided CD. I had an issue with an older version of wine but upgrading this allows one to pass the cd protection correctly.
Issues:
1. Moving page down in the notation window (needed if you have a long game or well annotated one) does not sync with the cursor on the notation window. Essentially, the board will correctly display the position but the notation window will still be one page behind. You can scroll down with the mouse in the notation window to fix this. This is annoying but works functionally speaking.
2. Building trees etc will show no dialog but usually works after a while.
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibilit ... pp_id=1409 was a page I initially started.
General conclusion: It works. This is better than Chessbase light (the new version) which does not. In terms of usability, it is not ideal given random quirks. Chessbase 7 is the most stable and usable under wine. However, Chess Assistant does work if the quirks do not bother you.
