Vescovi found the best move in a complex position:

bm a6 (Nd3 is good too but I believe a6 is significantly better).
Rybka 3 finds this rapidly, but other engines including mine have trouble.

Re: Vescovi-Shaked, Mermaid Beach Club 1997
Dann it is possible that the moves 1.Nd3 and 1.a6 lead to transpositions in the strongest variation, so some other programs may only find 1.Nd3 Qc3 2.a6 bxa6 and it may seem they do not find a solution. I wasn't sure because the evaluation really seemed to jump after trying 1.a6 at enough depth. But apparently the move a5-a6! is harder to find in the continuation after 1.Nd3 because there 2.Rb2 is also a good move, just not good enough to clear the eval of 1.a6. This seems to be the case with Bright, Blueberry and I suspect Rybka and Arasan, but you would have to do some multi-PV analysis to prove it (provided the multi-PV is accurate enough).
This is a phenomenon that I suppose helps iterative deepening in general even if there are no true transpositions in the strongest lines, the moves that do transpose in one line give some sort of baseline if they are tried in a different order by the iterative deepening algorithm, cut the number of needed hashentries etc. "Depth-first" algorithms (like what I try in Blueberry) can't profit from this in the same way. That is nothing new, because "depth first" existed before "iterative deepening" (also before transpostion tables though) but I suppose it is something that is not often tried anymore.
Regards, Eelco

I actually left Rybka analyzing this all night (forgot and left the computer on) and a6 was scored over +4, with the next-best move quite a bit behind. Unfortunately I didn't save all the analysis.

In the Shredder interface and probably other GUIs you can switch on a dumpfile so all the analysis gets stored automatically. But it is not on by default.
I have not yet been able to improve a solution time of 115 minutes. It is not so surprising, because I made changes to the PV search and that only involves Nd3 at first. I did see the eval for 1.Nd3 go down there because of the deeper searches which is good and should help a bit but then it takes too long building deeper analysis for 1.Nd3 while at the same time analysis for 1.a6 is left unchanged and solution times went waay up to over 400 minutes. But that did give a better eval:
