Well a few people have already played matches like this, so I decided to join the party. Two small test matches to see how Hiarcs played with own book and learning enabled.
Deep Fritz 10 GUI, Rybka with RybkaII.ctg, Hiarcs 12 UCI with built-in book. Time control 40/4 repeating
1CPU result
Rybka won 60 - 40 (+38 / =44 / -18)
2CPU result
Rybka won 63 - 37 (+43 / =40 / -17)
It doesn't seem as if Hiarcs performed any better than it would have done if both had been using generic books. Rybka still won convincingly. I did see many cases of the very deep Hiarcs book, coming out of book as late as move 33. Hiarcs certainly got a time advantage a lot of the time, where Rybka came out of book much earlier. Hiarcs book seems very impressive (although I'm not an expert by any means) but it didn't seem to help Hiarcs much. Of course, Hiarcs won almost one game in 5, and in a tournament with a small number of games, can be a real threat to Rybka
I will always use 64-bit engines where available. 64-bit is the future, even if it doesn't have huge market penetration right now. I think it is rapidly gaining momentum though. With DDR2 so incredibly cheap, I see many people upgrading to 4GB, and then seeing that 32-bit windows only uses a little over 3GB. So they then go and get Vista x64 to go with the memory upgrade. Vista x64 is already far better for drivers and software than XP X64 ever was. I think that is also why X64 is accelerating too.

What was the result with HIARCS 12 without own opening book, for comparison?
