Luring Monkeys with Bananas

Post by Tony Thomas »

I did an experiment during my tournaments yesterday. I was playing with Alfil, as you all know the logo of alfil is that of a monkey. So I sat down in front of the monitor and said "if you win the game, I will give you this banana". Ofcourse the monkey forgets that I offered the banana after every restart. Every time I offered the banana Alfil managed to win. Anyway, some interesting results of Alfil here. I was intrigued by the results from Patrick Buchanan to test the new beta version of Alfil. I had not tested the last two versions, 7.3 and 7.6 for some unknown reasons. I do not know if those versions made any leap in strength, but from 6.9 to 8x, Alfil is showing an improvement of about 158 points. Give or take the error margin of +66 or -64, thats an overall improvement within the range of 94-224 points. Alfil manages to get the first place in 3rd division, so it promotes to my 2nd division, the results will be available within a week or so.

I think Alfil means bishop in English, the Arabic meaning of Elephant would be similar as in some countries a Bishop is called an Elephant, a rook is called a Chariot, a knight is called a horse etc...

Dr.Wael Deeb is right.

The Spanish language has many words that come from Arabic, they usually begin with the words "al", for example almohada (pillow), alcohol, algebra, algoritmo (algorithm), almacen (storage), alfiler (pin).

Alfil means "the Elephant" in arabic.

But chess players spanish do not identify the piece "álfil" with nothing, not identified with the elephants, or with fou french, or the bishop english, for us it is simply a piece of chess.
