Which was the latest version of Rybka?

Post by Frank Quisinsky »

Hi there,

I am not sure!
I think in Chessbase Fritz 16 (GUI update 38) is the last version of Rybka inside.

Last Modif. Date: 20/12/2019 20:10:58
Time Date Stamp: 5A55E515h -> 10/01/2018 11:04:05

Maybe I am wrong?

Hi "Moderne Zeit",

OK, the older version 4.1 before Chessbase Fritz 15 / 16 is out ...

I have ... v4.1
Last Modif. Date: 17/03/2011 19:39:18
Time Date Stamp: 4BB527D8h -> 02/04/2010 01:10:16

That was the last on my backup drive.
But a newer version comes later from Chessbase.
After all I remember Chessbase gave the information ... 30 Elo stronger!

Best
Frank

Maybe I should test both version for my ETOG-G?

Hi Krzysztof,

I share nothing and have today also no interest to put new engines on my old site.

Again, after I remember Fritz 15 / Fritz 16 comes years after Rybka 4.1.
I believe with the information 30 Elo more.
I believe ... the boring Rybka isn't one of my favorits and in this case I collect main information only.
Rybka is a commercial engine lost a lot of games very fast. No king-saftey. The program is able to play a strong endgame, that's all. Today around 100, 200, 300 or more engines are available, much more interesting as Rybka. What on earth did people like about Rybka? I never understand it, the ways of the Lord.

But Rybka is one of the TOP-250 engines today, and I have interest to test all vs. the same group of opponents.

ebay is full of people selling the old ChessBase CDs.

Test-run for v4.1 and Fritz 16 started in two days.
I think both version will lost around 50 of the 1300 games lesser as 45 moves to mate!!

Different dates of Rybka 4.1 can be explained because it was not distributed as compiled executables, but as a bugfix executable to update already existing Rybka 4 executables:

Rybka 4.1 Release Notes

Vasik posted on March 5th, 2011 at RybkaForum with the instructions to follow. Different people logically updated on their own at different dates, thus the different dates of Rybka 4.1 local copies. The sizes of Deep Rybka 4.1 (multi-threaded) shall be:

Code: Select all

Deep Rybka 4.1 SSE42 w32.exe → 2,562,560 bytes.
Deep Rybka 4.1 SSE42 x64.exe → 2,840,064 bytes.
Deep Rybka 4.1 w32.exe → 2,562,560 bytes.
Deep Rybka 4.1 x64.exe → 2,848,768 bytes.
Ironically, I could reach the thread when I posted, but not right now while in a slight edit. Missed chance to had transcripted Vasik's OP. Later, I reached again, but in an ugly, raw format:
Vasik Rajlich Date 2011-03-05 07:17 Edited 2011-03-08 06:28 wrote:Overview

Rybka 4.1 is the latest UCI Rybka chess engine and is a free update for Rybka 4 customers. This is a relatively minor version - a number of bugs which existed in Rybka 4 are fixed, but there are no search or evaluation changes of any kind. The engine parameters are also mostly unchanged.

Update Instructions

In order to obtain Rybka 4.1, you will need to have the original Rybka 4 executables, and you will need to download the attached Rybka41Update.exe application. Then:

- Save Rybka41Update.exe to your hard drive and run it (usually by double-clicking the icon) and follow the instructions in the updater.
- The updater will look for existing Rybka programs in the directory you supply it with and create Rybka 4.1 versions alongside any Rybka 4 programs that are found.
- You can add these new Rybka 4.1 programs to your chess GUI of choice.
- After the update process the Rybka41Update.exe program can be deleted, but you may want to keep it for backup purposes.

The Rybka 4 to 4.1 updater works for both Deep Rybka 4 and Rybka 4.

Note 1: The updater should be pointed to the directory in which the Rybka 4 executables reside. If you have trouble finding the Rybka 4 executables, you can perform a system file search for "Rybka*.exe".
Note 2: The updater uses JoJoDiff by Joris Heirbaut, it is not necessary to download it, but the source of JoJoDiff can be obtained from http://jojodiff.sourceforge.net/

Thanks To

A big thanks to Nick Carlin for putting together the updater application, as well as to the Rybka team and the Beta testers for their help.

The fact that it dominated the competition for several years may have had something to do with it?
