Then start another thread. This is about M5, which you say will be trounced and then you start about the 5090.
I think you're missing my point. Apple themselves are making performance comparisons to their previous chips - claiming "4x the peak GPU compute performance for AI compared to M4" and "6x compared to M1." They're setting expectations with these numbers.
So you were talking about the M5, and then chose to compare it with the 5090.

The Apple M-series "Ultra" edition is used in the Studio and Mac Pro, and these you can compare to a desktop PC/workstation.

No. I was comparing two desktop-class GPUs, and from that making comments on the M5, since the M5 is clearly related to previous M processors.
Yes the post was about the M5 and its successors. No it was not a direct comparison between the M5 and the 5090.

I am the opposite of a fanboy, but I am honest enough to say that I have been very impressed with Apple's M series of SoCs: they run battery powered portable devices like phones, tablets and laptops, and for their weight, size and power consumption their processing power is truly astonishing.

I still don't recommend Apple products for most people - but let's be honest about what an outstanding job the designers of the M SoCs did.
Human chess is partly about tactics and strategy, but mostly about memory
