Post by Joost Buijs »

The monthly online engine blitz tournament for October will take place on:

Saturday, October 18, 2:00 PM EST (Boston time) 20:00 CET (Amsterdam time)

To connect, use the following command:

winboard -zp -ics -icshost nightmare-chess.nl -icshelper timeseal -fcp ENGINE.exe -fd ENGINEFOLDER -autoKibitz -keepAlive 30
(For UCI engines, add -fUCI)

If you don’t have an account, please submit a request to admin@nightmare-chess.nl.

Our tournament manager will be Eendje (Lisebeth @ ICC).

The format will be 9 rounds, Swiss system, 5/1 time control.

Lisebeth prefers to start the tournament on the hour, so please log in 15 minutes early. Late entries are not supported.

The tournament finished without problems, and there were a lot of participants this time (almost as good as in the past when we had over 40 particpants).

PlentyChess won the tournament, but there were three other engines with the same number of points.

Dog the engine from Folkert van Heusden increased by 450 Elo points in just one month time, this seems rather strange, I wonder what he did.

Lunar and Viper also got very strong, the blitz tournament is getting more and more difficult all the time.

I've not been doing much with Nightmare for the last 6 years, it's still the engine from 2019, standing still means going backwards, I guess I have to start working on it again.

A few tweaks here and there (rented some hardware at https://cloud.vast.ai/?ref_id=233061 (referral link) to generate additional data to train the net).
What also might make a difference is that I went from 5 threads to 16 threads.

Next time: 31 threads!

Except that I lost connection in a draw endgame in my game against PlentyChess and lost on time, had to restart with the help of Eendje.

Saw that Gideon (1993) got 2 out 9 :D

Thanks Joost and Eendje for hosting.

Very nice! I don't watch sites like CCRL anymore, but I have the feeling that Dog would get something like 3400 Elo overthere.

My engine is getting too old, the engine is from 2000-2001 and the network is from 2019. It uses a good book, and very good hardware, but if I want to stay competitive: I really have to get of my ass and start working on it again.

The last 5 years I was mainly busy with International Draughts, but that is getting a bit boring because it has a 10 to 100 times higher drawing-rate than Chess.

Losing connection is not a big problem, normally the game should continue from where it was. The 'Lasker' server software is rather buggy, I removed most bugs that made it crash, but still strange glitches appear now and then.

This was PlentyChess 7.0.2 pre-release, otherwise know as PlentyChess 7 TI.

https://github.com/Yoshie2000/PlentyChess/releases

It was running 16 threads on an Intel i7 12700 (8 P-cores, 4 E-Cores) and pondering was working as it should.
