Fritz - engine name change

Post by Krzysztof Grzelak »

How to change the engine name to your own in Fritz. It says in the manual:

Modifying engines
Many UCI engines allow you to modify a number of search and evaluation parameters which influence the playing style of the engine. To change the parameters proceed as described above. In the Create UCI engine dialog click on the button Parameters. Each UCI engine will display the parameters which can be changed, and which vary for different engines. If you change any of the parameters the input fields for "Name" and "Author" become active and can be modified, within the constraints described above. After clicking "OK" the new engine is registered and will appear in the engine list, together with the other UCI and native chess engines. Please note: modifying and storing an engine with a different name does not create a new copy of the engine on your hard disk. Only the modified parameters are stored
under the new name and applied to the engine when this is started.
See also Engine Interface ....
See also UCI Priority ...

Despite many attempts, I was never able to change the engine name. Unless I'm doing something wrong. Thank you in advance for the information.

Chessbase-GUI's doesn't allow to use other names as hardcoded in the engine exe file. I think it is to prevent the use of false names on the CB-server. In Banksia-GUI you can use any name you want.

Go to the "C:\Users\<your name>\AppData\Roaming\ChessBase\Engines.UCI" where the engine eng files are stored and copy/edit them there.

This don't work in my Fritz! Original name is always used.

In my experience, editing the engine file does half the job: the new name for the engine will appear in the drop-down list of engines you can load; but after actually loading the engine the original name is used instead. Pretty sloppy all in all.

Yes, but in the saved game the name you gave will be used. I do it all the time.

In test suites in Fritz- GUIs you can give a name of your choice to each one single run despite of the name of the engine, regards
Peter.
