Hyperthreading question ?

Post by WuShock »

After 12+ yrs , I recently moved up to an AMD 5950X , 16 cores . Currently it has HT enabled . If I run an engine with 8 threads , it uses 25 % of the cpu power . With HT turned off it will use 50 % . What is the approx Elo difference between the two methods ? I'm not worried about a small difference , but curious .....
Thanks ....

I think there shouldn't be any because your operating system should be smart enough not to load a core with two worker threads if there are still unused cores available.

Much better with the usage of HT. I think it has the same ELO but different usage of CPU. You can test it, with a same engine doing a 1000 or 100 games the one with HT on 8 threads vs 1 thread and the one with HT off 8 threads vs 1 thread. Then you can compare the results. But it must use exactly the same opening for both testing.
