In professional shogi, when a game ends in a draw, another game is immediately played with reversed colors WITHOUT RESETTING THE CLOCKS. If necessary multiple games could be played until someone wins. As long as there is increment or delay or specified time per move after time runs out (as in pro shogi), the victory should still be decided on the board, as long as the players keep moving within the specified increment, delay, or time per move. Someone always wins, the draws just don't count. I don't see any reason that the same thing couldn't be done in chess, whether human or engine chess, but I have never heard of anyone running a chess event this way. Has anyone here ever heard of such a chess event?
Naturally there are some practical issues; for server play this type of time control would have to be implemented, presumably no one supports it now. For engine play, the programs would have to learn how to manage time for such events, perhaps simply by budgeting for maybe 200 moves instead of 40 or 50, for example.
This way of playing rewards the player who puts pressure (poses problems) on the opponent, because even if the game ends in a draw, if one player needs to take much more time to hold the draw, he will likely lose the next (or subsequent) game. The player who plays better is more likely to end up winning than with normal rules for this reason. This method is suitable for Classical, Rapid, or Blitz games, although the increment (or delay) should be short to keep the total length of the session reasonably predictable.
A further improvement for chess would be to not reverse colors for the third game only, so colors would be WBBWBWBWBW etc. With this rule it's not particularly obvious whether it's better to start with White or Black (probably depends mostly on draw percentage), so it's even a reasonable rule for a single "game" playoff.
For engine games, the increment should probably be just one second, so that once the players have used almost all of their base time playing a few draws the result will come down to one second increment play. That should insure a decisive result in a reasonable time, although perhaps with super hardware and ever-stronger engines even one second increment play might have too high a draw percentage, in which case the increment can be shortened further to whatever is needed to get some decisive results in a reasonable number of games. For human play, the increment should probably not go below 2 seconds to avoid games being decided by physical move time.

Re: The shogi solution to draws in chess
Hi.
That might work for elite professional players, whose only income source is chess.
Amateur players (like me) do not have a draw problem.
Also, we arrive already tired from work to the tournaments... do not ask us to play extra games (remember: we lose money by joining tournaments, but we have a lot of fun).
Greetings.

But having fun by paying a fee to participate where most of of the money from lower rated players will be used to give higher rated players a big prize is NOT what I call having Fun.

Re: The shogi solution to draws in chess
This is a proposal I remember being associated with Kasimdzhanov quite some time ago (although his initial idea was just to reset the clocks to progressively shorter TCs rather than keeping the time).
I think Maurice Ashley was interested in this "switch colors and keep the clock times" approach and held some events this way at the Marshall club, if I remember correctly.
I've always been fond of this idea, and it seems to be more tolerable to most players than some of the other common proposals, at least based on the discussions I've had with other players.

Re: The shogi solution to draws in chess
I have said this before and it is a bit of an educated guess but maybe we are witnessing the end of the Bayeselo / Ordo system.
Consider this example:
Match SF vs Dragon, 10,000 games, result: won 100 | draw 9900 | loss 0 | 5050 - 4950 = 50.5% = 3 elo
With Bayeselo or Ordo both will be rated that way, right?
In reality SF is much stronger, never lost a game, but won 100.
Maybe we need a new elo formula in Bayeselo / Ordo .
Two suggestions
1. A win counts as 1½ or even 2 points, a draw remains ½ point
2. Skip all draws.
Option [2] can be done without a program change and I would love to see how the CEGT and CCRL list will look like.

I suspect it would come down to Internet connection lag. Interesting proposal, nonetheless.lkaufman wrote: ↑Tue Jul 26, 2022 2:30 amFor engine games, the increment should probably be just one second, so that once the players have used almost all of their base time playing a few draws the result will come down to one second increment play. Maybe they would have to play on chess.com or ICC where lag is accounted for. But that sort of makes the in-person event seem unnecessary.Ozymandias wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 4:50 pmI suspect it would come down to Internet connection lag. Re: The shogi solution to draws in chess
Not rating draws has been discussed and tried in the past, it even has a cute name - WILO. The ratings are of course much spread out, more and more so at the top, so the gap between best SF and Dragon in Rapid, which is currently six elo (CCRL four threads), might instead be 60 WILO or even much more.Rebel wrote: ↑Wed Jul 27, 2022 8:26 am I have said this before and it is a bit of an educated guess but maybe we are witnessing the end of the Bayeselo / Ordo system.

Re: The shogi solution to draws in chess
The solution is simple enough I think:
1. Count draws towards final standings is okay...as a draw is a pretty natural outcome to most chess games.
2. Do NOT count draws when it comes to prize money payout.
#2 is the key. It would encourage even tail enders to play for a win...instead of riding out the tournament and hoping for a better situation in the next.
It would also encourage them to play more of their 'home cooking' later in tournaments as the result of a game would be what determines their share of the prize fund. Frankly, it would discourage late draws among tail enders as well.
You may well wan to keep a 'top prize' or 1st, 2nd, etc...but Those who win more will naturally finish towards the top of the standings so their final take home will take care of itself.those need to be kept to a minimum and/or small appearance fees (where those happen). The main thing is to reward fighting spirt.
I think Bronstein or someone once suggested or thought of the idea of paying based on the fighting spirt. This is a simple capitalistic way of doing the same thing.
Ex: a $100,000 prize fund. The final payout would remain in flux until the end in this zero-sum scenario. You might carve out 20% to be paid out in set place prizes (just coming up with numbers here, YMMV) and let the other 80% be up for grabs based on decisive games...straight till the final move of the final game.
