Also, there is not much point in doing it on time, if in a few weeks there will be stronger participants which will only then be available to join.
That is an interesting point.

I don't know. They didn't care that Critter wasn't stable in season 6 (crashed several times, messing up wins or draws into losses) and they included it in season 7 (also crashed there). I remember someone asked whether Critter would be discarted for the next season and Martin said that no. So if they didn't change their minds, Critter will be included in the next season even though it is known not to be stable on 16 cores.
However some engines like Equinox were removed because they weren't stable enough, so I don't know the criteria of stability used.

Maybe you could wait for Critter to crash (on 16 cores), then create a full memory dump and compute its hash (md5/sha/whatever), I bet THIS would give you a "truly" random number

So, ideally we should wait forever to have the best possible match! :-)

A few weeks, if it would make a worthwhile difference. Unless it would ruin some huge plans to do that.

Martin was logged in here earlier today (so at least he is still active and looking around sort of speak). I guess Martin has a TCEC partner. His name is Anton Mihailov. Martin must really be busy these days. At least we have confirmation now as to the present status of TCEC.

I believe he is the CEO of Chessdom:

ChessArena is a product of chessdom.com; for a while Martin had some support from chessdom.com for TCEC, see for example the URL of the live games http://tcec.chessdom.com
Nothing new in the involvement of chessdom.com with TCEC.
A bit unusual the lack of communication from Martin, but he might just be taking some time off chess before jumping back in.

A couple years or so ago Martin took a break for awhile but came back in later and started TCEC.
