The Goering Gambit

On this variant, very popular during the Romantic chess, rivers of ink have been spilled.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.b4 Bxb4 5.c3 Bc5 6.d4 exd4 7.O-O d6 8.cxd4 Bb6 9.Nc3 Na5 10.Bg5 Ne7 11.Bxf7

After: 1... Kxf7 12.Nd5 Re8! (the best defense)

FEN: r1bqr3/ppp1nkpp/1b1p4/n2N2B1/3PP3/5N2/P4PPP/R2Q1RK1 w - - 2 13

Black can force a perpetual check with: 13.Bxe7 Rxe7 14.Ng5+ Kg8 15.Qh5 g6 16.Nf6+.

However, now comes the fun part:

for Stockfish-5 the best move is: 13.Nxe7??
for Komodo-8 the best move is: 13.e5??

Ippolit ver. 0.80 (single cpu): he instantly finds the best move (Bxe7) and the exact variant in less than 5 (five!) seconds. How is this possible? :)

This is actually the Evans Gambit.

Goering Gambit is:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. c3

True, mine was an inaccuracy. The exact definition is: Evans Gambit, variant Goering Attack.

Stockfish: 16 threads, 1 min.
Ippolit 0.80: 1 (one) thread, 5 seconds (to be precise: 4.65 sec.).

There is a big difference... Houston, we have a problem.
Too many cuts? Or what else?

About 6 engines of mine found it pretty quickly on my 4 core i7 but Deep Junior 2010 (Psycho) found it instantly.

yes the Evan's gambit is sound and fun to play,
The Black move 5...Bc5 is probably not so good
(instead of Bg5 after ...NA5 White can also play Be2).

What i have as main Evan's gambit lines is something like this

but there are lots of sidelines of course.

Haven't included Evan's in my book (Goering, yes!) because of
a possible 3...Nf6 the two knights game. But then with 4.d4 White
can also continue in gambit style, so it is a playable alternative
besides the move 2.d4 which i like if White goes for a gambit.

I don't get it, why this is so hard for Stockfish. If in check there is no early pruning, so that should rule out nullmove, ProbCut, Futility pruning when above alpha (or the so called static nullmove). In the next ply any check then receives an extension of a full ply, unless the check has a negative Static Exchange Evaluation. Modifying the extension rule to include all checks when in positions with a with a bad static eval makes no difference. Modifying LMR makes no difference.

Stockfish: 16 threads, 1 min.
Ippolit 0.80: 1 (one) thread, 5 seconds (to be precise: 4.65 sec.).

There is a big difference... Houston, we have a problem.
Too many cuts? Or what else?
The problem is
why Ippolit find this super hard combination so fast.

You need to find that black is losing in the following line
in order to find the combination.
22.Rac1 is winning for white but if you try real weak engines they need some seconds to see that white does not lose after Kxd4 so seeing it from the root position is too complex.
