I'd like to see Crafty v CSTal some time soon.

Should be fun.

Chris
There are a handful of engines I'd like to add in the poll, but the poll said there were too many choices so I had to remove some of them.

Crafty, I believe, is still somewhat weak to stand up to the engines listed.

I have no idea what CSTal is.

You've been around here since 2006 and don't know what CSTal is??? :P

A very aggressive engine from a long time ago with an awesome playing style. I don't think it's available any more. Other people could tell you a lot more about it.

It was not that aggressive. Ultimately it was pretty spineless. Maybe that is why I'd like to see Crafty destroy it. It would be no less than it deserves.

May i APPEAL to many people here, to PLEASE try to consider the following:
1). Rybka 4 vs the most likely thing to challenge it, which seems to be Houdini 1.03.

If this new Houdini does not seem ready fo this yet, then

PLEASE martin, can Rybka 3 enter the voting and consider

2). Stockfish Vs. Rybka 3 (at setting most likely to ward off the challenge).

This either/or is what is most thrilling for me (for whatever reasons, but others might agree when thinking about it), and is the closest to my heart, and even though the main thing is to watch the games and appreciate the actual chess, these 2 combinations (either/or, ie if Houdini 1.03 is not enough more than 1.02, then to do the Rybka 3-SF) are what are most likely to bring me to watching and enjoying the actuall chess in the games.

Obviously, the owner of the site is the one to choose what he wants, and if put to vote, then everyone can influence to be done what they want, as the owner offers it. However, me personally, I don't think i can be blamed for wishing for what i wish for. Thanks Martin and all!

By the way, I think that the stronger the engine, the more likely we can expect its reasoning to make long-range sense. This ought to be what would attract people, isn't it?

To answer your #1:
I agree that Houdini 1.03a might give R4 a very hard fought match. And as you say, probably the only one that can beat R4.

However, I'd prefer to run a few more matches with other engines first, since R4 and Houdini 1.02 already played.

Your passion is appreciated, but I am sorry to say that R3 is pretty far down the list for now. 8-)

Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Best Regards,
Martin

Which engines would you like to see next?

Please vote for 2 engines in the list!

The poll will run until the current match is finished (3-4 days I presume).

Matches already played:
Rybka 4 - Houdini 1.02
Rybka 4 - Stockfish 1.8
Stockfish 1.8 - Houdini 1.03a

Note: I am only including Houdini as the representative of the IPP family of engines (even though it might not be related much, but that's another debate). So please no suggestions of Fire/Ippolit/Ivanhoe/Robbolito/Igoritt/Yadayada/Bladablada.
Hi Martin.
I don't know much about Critter,Komodo and Spark.
Do they have ideas from the ipp family as Stockfish has.

Best,
Gerold.

Hello Gerold,

As far as I know, all these 3 engines are unique. They are at least considered originals in all discussion I know.

All 3 programmers of those engines are members of this forum.

Richard Vida - Critter
Don Dailey - Komodo
Allard Siemelink - Spark

I am sure they are much more qualified to answer your question in a proper way.

Best Regards,
Martin

I can believe Houdini has "ideas" from ippo, but i never heard that Stockfish has even that. Did you mean Stockfish?

Thanks for your reply Martin.
I have downloaded Critter and testing it vs.Stockfish.
Critter appears to be as strong as R3 or maybe stronger.

Best,
Gerold.
