I'd like to play two computers against one another. I have done so through the use of a NULL MODEM (SERIAL CABLE) in the past..........However, my new computer does not have a SERIAL connection.
I'd like to play Fritz 10 vs Fritz 10 also Rybka 2.3 UCI Rybja vs 2.3 UCI
comparing the difference between an AMD Athlon 2600+ and an AMD 5000+ Dual Core Processor.
Can I link the two Computers thru a USB 2 connection??
Or Serial with a USB Converter to the USB Connection on the other PC??
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Computer vs Computer Without a NULL MODEM CABLE?????
you can buy an adapter from USB to port serial by about 18 euros, then you can make work to Fritz by auto232 with the cable series (null modem).

You will be able to easily find that adapter in any store of computers.
Another possibility is that if you have in both equipment network card you make a network with the computers conected by means of a cable of crossed network. Arena allows to play a game between 2 computers bynetwork (although Arena does not allow engines of chessbase)

Perhaps another option is to put to each computer an adapter bluetooth, these devices allow have a serial port type COM, then you could use Fritz or Arena to make play a program against another without cables. I have seen these devices with reach of 10 meters by about 10 euros.

Thanks for your speedy reply. Greatly appreciated.
Can I also just simply link the two PCs with a USB connection.
Just curious, why don't they mention the use of USB in the help files with the Fritz 10 program??
Which connection offers the best results....Network or USB?
Thanks again
Brian

Re: Computer vs Computer Without a NULL MODEM CABLE?????
Hi Brian,
Sorry my englis is ...
The Fritz10 program allows to play with another program in another computer by means of auto232 (serial port). Fritz10 I believe that it does not allow to play by network, at least of one simple form.
Arena is another interface that you can find free, allows you setup engines with protocol winboard and uci, but those of did not chessbase. Arena also allows to play against another program in another computer by means of auto232. In the case of Arena, he himself program has in its menu the option to play in network against another Arena in another computer.
The Fritz10 program does not allow to play against another Fritz10 in another computer and that the 2 computers are united by a cable USB. For that reason you do not see information in the help file.
That happens if your computer does not have serial port?
I give 2 solutions you
1) You purchases an adapter from port USB to serial port, that adapter is placed in one of the computers (one that does not have serial port), you will continue still needing the cable null modem and the connection of Fritz to Fritz continues being by auto232.
2) Your purchases two devices bluetooth, one for each computer, each device have been creating a port COM in each one of the computers, then the connection for of Fritz to Fritz by means of auto232, but in this case you do not need the cable null modem since the communication becomes without cables by waves. I have not proven this option but she must work. If that I have proven to make work Arena in the PC with CEBoard in pocket PC.
I think that he is more interesting to use auto232 because many programs use it, for example you can make play in a computer Fritz against Chessmaster in another computer. The network option is less used. And of the two options that I to you give for auto232 I believe that I would use second, two devices of bluetooh, although I would like to know the opinion other people.
Best,
Pedro

In the event that both computers only have USB (Since newer computers don't seem to have Serial Connections anymore)
Do you have to use a Serial converter???
Or can you just connect USB TO USB?
Thanks

Re: Computer vs Computer Without a NULL MODEM CABLE?????
You must watch in the programs that you want to make work. For example in the case of Fritz10, if you unite the 2 computers with a cable USB, that option of the menu will allow you to play a game between Fritz and Fritz (or another program) of each one of the computers?
You will not find any option, you will see in the menu (Tools --> Connect hardware) the option auto232 that is a communication by the serial port. Perhaps a day we can to see in Fritz (and other programs) "autousb", but until that day you will have to continue using auto232.
If the computers has not serial port, you will be able to add each one a converter usb-serial port (and soon to unite them by the cable null modem) or what I believe that is better to put in each one an adapter bluetooth that provides in each computer a serial port and not to have to use the cable null modem (I do not know which has proven this second option).
