uci mate score

I read https://publish.obsidian.md/modern-uci- ... ngine/info that uci expects mate scores to be in whole moves.
Personally I don't like this always. Is it "forbidden" to announce mate scores in plies?

the spec explicitly says it's mate in n moves. I personally find mate in n plies confusing

It would be non-compliant, except for mate in 1.

It would not be considered an error on which you could forfeit the game.
