I appreciate the work Dann and others have done verifying my test suite. I have been working on an updated version, the latest draft of which is here:

I have removed some problematic tests and added some new ones - the additions are generally fairly difficult. There are 300 positions now.

Many thanks. IMO Arasan 7 test was the best for predicting tactical ability.

FYI if you're looking for problems that are difficult you may be interested in the book The Big Book of Combinations. This has 190 positions that Zarkov 2.5 couldn't solve in a reasonable time. I did some analysis of these positions back in 2000. You can see this on my website www.stevemaughan.com. Some of these positions are still tough for todays engines and may be worth including on your suite.

Many of the "Big Book of Combination" positions seem to be excellent tests.

There is some overlap with other sources. For example, Panno-Eliskases is ECM #1403, Schmidt-Richter is ECM #1224.

Yes there are some overlaps and there are some errors too. Overall I like many of the positions in BBC and there are some positions that are only solved by the best tactical engines.

Based on Dann's latest results (which I saw after first posting the test) and running some of Steve's combination tests I have made the following changes:

drop 4.86, 4.50, 6.16 - due to unclear solutions.

drop Timman-Karpov test because it is also in GCP's ECM subset

drop the following easy tests: 4.53, 4.98, 7.10 to make room for some more interesting combinations
