Fixed depth games/tournaments

Post by braeburn »

We all know that the strength of a chess computer depends on the software and on the hardware it's running on. The principal reason why dedicated cc's lose out to PC software programs.

So I have been wondering whether you can eliminate the hardware effect by running fixed depth games.

For instance if two computers both have fixed depth level of, say, 6 ply then a tournament could be very interesting.

Anyone any experience here?

Or is it simply pointless?

Engines often count depth (or ply) very differently, making it a practical impossibility to run an "equal" depth match.

To account for speed differences, some testers adjust the search times instead.
