Re: So, Steven, Should I....?
well as you can see Jon is reporting unusually high chess playing ability for the Beryl with its small program
i think i will buy one for myself as a "Get Well" present for myself when i return from Hospital
but i think i will wait until i actually Return and not before
otherwise my wife will only have one more computer to sell for $5 on Ebay
of course it would be very nice if YOU bought one for me but i think there are two chances i have that you would do that for me
1.Slim
2.None
Realist Regards

Hi Fernando,
Just so we are not at cross purposes here....please don't expect the Beryl to be a 1700 ELO wonder. It is probably somewhere around the high 1300s - 1450 mark (as a rough guesstimate at this stage).
However the program is tiny and runs on incredibly modest hardware. For it to play as it does with such a generously expansive openings library and to recognise all the draws (including 3 fold repetitions that are not consecutive) is simply a remarkable example of a coding genius at work. Even more remarkable is that the program can deliver mate with King and Rook versus King, as well knowing the technical rules regarding King and Pawn versus King. Not even the Mephisto Miami, arguably the strongest 16K program ever written and some 500 points stronger - has the chess knowledge to play King and Pawn versus King correctly.
Nevertheless, whilst being mindful of the above caveats, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that it would convincingly demolish, chew up, spit out and grind into the footpath with it's heel - any other 4K chess program ever written when running on comparable hardware.

Just 1400 or so Elo?
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I was expecting at least 1600.
I can demolish any machine worth 1900 Elo, imagine a 1400.
I will re-think the entire Business.....
99 bucks are 99 bucks after all regards

I was already purchasing the Beryl for you, as a a gift after hospital agony, but your unkind words has pertubed my initial intention.

Sorry, but considering the historical facts surrounding your nephew life, I would prefer to go to the dentist than bearing the little beast.
But in compensation I can take care of your collection and financial assets after giving to Carrie a decent 10.500 bucks check.
I do everything for my friends and which is your mail address for God sake

I have Beryl and for me it gives good matches, but that doesn't say too much.
But I don't like it of another reason. It has only a display for the chess moves and that is ok for me.
But:
The display isn't seen from where you are, when you are playing. You must lean forward over the computer to see what the display says. Very uncomfortable. I can’t recommend the chess computer.
