Thanks Steve..
Yeah, this seems to be rather difficult for most portables...

Re: Good Test for Dedicated
I got out my two working units and put them on the task.
First is the Staid Compuchess (1977), which could not find the move on level 5, the 10 hour level. So, it's now working on the highest level 6 (a 1-2 day response according to the manual). I'm not optimistic, since it's a 6 or 7 ply problem. But we'll see.
Meanwhile, Boris (also 1977) couldn't find it in 10 hours, so it's now grinding away at the 99 hour level. I think it should find it.
My pc program finds this in 0.7 sec running about 4000 times faster. If we slow my pc down to 1 mhz, which is the rate I believe these units run, Amateur would need about 45 minutes. Of course, to make it fair, I'd have to reduce my ram to 4k, which would kind of wreck the hashing and move-ordering.

That Compuchess computer was the third chess computer ever released for sale and as such played an alarmingly strong game of chess
i submit for your consideration the following game played earlier today on level 4(20seconds-15 minutes response time):
[White "Steve B"]
[Black "CompuChess"]
[Result "1-0"]
[ECO "D25"]
1. d4 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 Bg4 5. Bxc4 e6 6. Nc3 Be7 7. O-O O-O 8. h3
Bxf3 9. Qxf3 c6 10. e4 Qxd4 11. Bd3 Nfd7 12. Bf4 e5 13. Bh2 b6 14. Rad1 Qc5 15.
Qh5 Nf6 16. Qe2 Nbd7 17. Kh1 a6 18. f4 exf4 19. Bxf4 a5 20. e5 Ne8 21. Qh5
[d] r3nrk1/4bppp/1pp2n2/p1q1P2Q/5B2/2NB3P/PP4P1/3R1R1K w - - 0 22
The Little Compuchess has just essayed forth the brilliant defensive maneuver 21..Ndf6!!
an unwary White player would take the N with 22.Pxf6 only to lose his Q with 22..Qxh5
22. Qh4 b5
[d] r3nrk1/4bppp/2p2n2/ppq1P3/5B1Q/2NB3P/PP4P1/3R1R1K w - - 0 23
Sadly the Compuchess.. thinking that the danger is now past ..goes astray here with the unsuspecting 22..b5( no doubt exhausted at this point from its being under constant pressure by my relentless brutal attack)
23. exf6 Nxf6 24. Bg5 h6 25. Bxh6 gxh6
26. Rxf6!!!!!!!!
[d] r4rk1/4bp2/2p2R1p/ppq5/7Q/2NB3P/PP4P1/3R3K b - - 0 26
even Tal himself could not be prepared for this Masterful sac of the exchange
26.. Bxf6 27. Qxh6 Rfe8
[d] r3r1k1/5p2/2p2b1Q/ppq5/8/2NB3P/PP4P1/3R3K w - - 0 28
here i announce to myself a Mate in 3!
29. Bg6+Kg8 30. Qh7+ Kf8 31. Qxf7# 1-0
FINAL POSITION
[d] r3rk2/5Q2/2p2bB1/ppq5/8/2N4P/PP4P1/3R3K b - - 0 31
Up Next..The CompuChess SECOND Edition

a win is a win...makes no difference if the oponent is rated less then 1000 Elo as with the CompuChess

Re: Good Test for Dedicated (update)
Both units have been working diligently since last Thursday on this "challenging" position. Boris has 4 hours to go, still showing e7-b4, sadly. CompuChess merely blinks level 6, so its current best move is a secret. (supposed to be a 1-2 day response, so for all I know it's hung up. The manual doesn't indicate a way to interrupt the machine's thinking.)Will Singleton wrote:I got out my two working units and put them on the task.
