v2.2.5 should be stable and bug free for the long run now.

I kept finding more bugs and pushed a couple releases last night . The current version is 2.2.8 and fixes that promotion (stale move history) bug.

It also addresses an issue when reconnecting, rematching and a stale search tree bug. Ignores if an ongoing search was happening during a disconnect that may have stale information.

Anyway lots of testing and bug fixes. I've started adding release notes so you can see what bugs were fixed and features added.

Edit: The server doesn't support the resume command however on disconnect this auto reconnects and the "match opponent" does work and resumes the game.

This is just that the gui / icsdrone doesn't respond to the signal the game has ended. So the engine makes a move after that which isn't accepted by the server. Not a real bug, it just doesn't check that sort of messages.

That is correct. It has since been fixed. Goes to show how fast i/o can be in the fraction of a second between the server sending the move and then the Game over it sent the move to the engine and the engine responded back. I've added guard rails so this doesn't happen again. Appreciate the feedback and hope it's all working well now.

A subtle change most may over look is the little button at the bottom right that is a light or moon. That lets you toggle light or dark mode. Right now it defaults to the setting of your operating system but this allows you to over ride it if you prefer dark.

Thanks for the updates to the server Joost! See you added the new guest account system. Been beating it up recently in testing and it's been running solid. Looking forward to this months event.

I don't come here often because this forum most of the time incredibly slow, each time these 'forbidden' messages, I wonder when this will be fixed.

The server core is very stable and reliable, the difficult part is to get everything compatible with all the different GUI's out there. The protocol is not documented at all, Lasker, FICS and ICS, they all behave different.

Lisebeth (our tournament manager) would like to have everything exactly the same as it was before, but there are always things that will function somewhat different now.

I will add the resume command too, and maybe there are other commands used by ICS and FICS that were not available in the old Lasker server.

The next tournament will be the 17th, I hope everything runs stable, we test as much as we can, but it's impossible to test every combination of commands that will occur in practice. At least it's stable, it doesn't break when we run a fuzzer on it, but there is a chance that some things don't work as expected.

I think that everything could be solved if any gui is sending a move as "long" notation from to fields "e2e4" (e1g1 for short castling), e7e8q (r, b,n) for promotion. This covers ALL cases, all sort of moves, no exceptions. Will kill all the headaches. :)

I updated icsdrone-rs to v2.2.10 luckily no bug fixes need, this is purely cosmetic and lets you select your pieces and boards. Think this is about as far as this project needs to go unless other bugs creep in. Till then, enjoy and for those participating see you this weekend on nightmare-chess.

Minor note: check the small sun/moon icon at the bottom right. That lets you toggle between light and dark mode. Everything else is pretty easy to follow.

Lots of thanks to lichess and the various board, piece and font authors which made this possible.

Could someone give me the minimal commands that I need to know to participate to a tournament?

@jshriver

I am testing icsdrone-rs v2.2.10. Seems to work well. I noticed one little bug (?): The book size in the log is always 0:
Loading opening book /home/roland/Documents/pascal/echecs/moustique/git/gm2001.bin (0.0 GB)…
I would like to test my installation before the tournament, but I don't know how to do.

Just login to nightmare-chess.nl, or you can create a computer account on freechess.org (same interface).

Code: Select all

./icsdrone -icsHost <hostname> -icsPort 5000 -handle <comp's server account> -password <comp's password> -easyMode off -logging on -logFile <path to log> -program <exe path>
It can be helpful to have a second non-computer account on the server, to observe the engine's behavior and control it. You can login with winboard/xboard as a human. If you have this, add -owner <your handle> to the icsdrone command line.

Thank you. I'm starting to get a clearer picture. I was able to play a game against my engine. I think my setup will be ready for the next tournament. 8-)
