1. The leadership has flipped
At round 100, both Reckless variants sat in the top 4 and PlentyChess was
chasing. By round 200 that's reversed completely: PlentyChess (both 16MB
and 32MB) now leads the field by a wide margin, while Reckless has fallen
from co-leader to mid-table — Reckless 0.9.0 is down to -13.9
from its start Elo, and Reckless-H32 has collapsed to -42.1.
This isn't noise: the sample per pairing has doubled to 200 games and the
trend is consistent across both Reckless variants, not just one.

2. Where Reckless is actually losing ground
It's not a broad decline — it's concentrated. Reckless-H32 scores only
41.75% against PlentyChess and 48.25% against PlentyChess-H32, while
still handling the bottom half of the field fine (51-59% against
Pawnocchio and Alexandria variants). Same pattern for plain Reckless:
47.75% vs PlentyChess, comfortable everywhere else. Whatever PlentyChess
is doing at this time control, Reckless specifically struggles to answer
it — this looks more like a stylistic matchup problem than a general
weakness.

3. Hash effect — updated, and one reversal
  • Reckless: 16MB +28 Elo over 32MB (2864.1 vs 2835.9) — the gap widened from ~18 to ~28 since round 100.
  • PlentyChess: 16MB +10 Elo over 32MB (2918.3 vs 2908.3) — still 16MB ahead, gap grew slightly from ~6.
  • Pawnocchio: 32MB +29 Elo over 16MB (2890.3 vs 2860.9) — widened from ~18, same direction as before.
  • Alexandria: 32MB now +8 Elo over 16MB (2774.9 vs 2767.2) — this one flipped direction from round 100, where 16MB was slightly ahead.
Three of four engines are showing a hash preference that's holding or
strengthening as the sample grows (Reckless and PlentyChess favor 16MB,
Pawnocchio favors 32MB) — that's starting to look like signal rather
than noise. Alexandria's flip is a reminder that an ~8 Elo gap at the
bottom of the field, where both variants are already 65-73 Elo below
their start rating, isn't worth reading into yet.

4. A number worth flagging: Pawnocchio-H32's Elo vs score% mismatch
Pawnocchio-H32 gained +70.3 Elo (the single biggest mover in the field)
but its Score% is only 48.8% — technically a losing record. That's not
a contradiction: Live Elo here reflects strength relative to opponents
whose own ratings have also been moving, so a sub-50% score can still
coincide with a genuine rating gain if the pool got tougher overall.
Worth watching whether that gap closes or widens by round 300.

5. Draw/decisive pattern is holding steady
4,800 games — White 44.52%, Black 7.10%, Draws 48.38% — essentially
unchanged from the round-100 numbers (44.25/7.13/48.63). At double the
sample, this ratio looks like a stable property of the setup (short TC +
sharp anti-draw book + 5-man TB) rather than an early fluctuation.

Bottom line at the 2/3 mark
Biggest story of this checkpoint: PlentyChess took over the top spot
while Reckless dropped hard, largely due to one specific matchup rather
than a general form dip. On hash: Reckless, PlentyChess and Pawnocchio
are each showing a growing, consistent preference for one hash size —
Alexandria's result stays too close to call. Final numbers at round 300.

Curiosity: Round 196 — Reckless vs PlentyChess (0-1)

White dominated most of the game (+9/+11 in the endgame) until it came
down to a bare king vs king+pawn ending. Right there, for 6 moves in a
row (54-60), both engines dropped to depth=1 —
a clear sign the clock was running out under the 9s+0.1s TC. The irony:
White burned time chasing the h5 pawn with its king (58-60) at the exact
moment Black's king regained the tempo needed to run its own pawn
(e6-e5-e4-e3-e1=Q). Once material dropped into 5-man territory, the
Syzygy TB gave an instant, correct answer (depth 25+, M500) — but
by then the game was already lost. A neat example of how UltraBullet
can turn a theoretically won endgame into a loss purely on time, not
tactics.

1. The final shape of the field
PlentyChess (16MB) takes it clearly,
gaining +48.8 Elo over its start rating
and finishing nearly 30 points clear of its own 32MB twin.
Reckless, which was co-leading at round 100, ends mid-table — its
16MB version holds up reasonably (-8.7) but the
32MB version has fallen hard (-66.1).
Alexandria closes out last regardless of hash, still
74-83 Elo below where it started.

2. Hash size — the real verdict, engine by engine
  • Reckless: 16MB finishes +57 Elo above 32MB (2869.3 vs 2811.9). This gap kept widening at every single checkpoint (~18 > ~28 > ~57) — about as clean a signal as you'll get from an Elo-based test.
  • PlentyChess: 16MB finishes +29 Elo above 32MB (2920.8 vs 2892.1). Same pattern — the gap grew steadily at every checkpoint (~6 > ~10 > ~29).
  • Pawnocchio: the surprise of the test. Through round 200 it looked like the mirror image of Reckless — 32MB pulling steadily ahead. By round 300 that gap has completely closed. And it closed in a stranger way than I expected — see the coincidence below.
  • Alexandria: the smallest, noisiest signal. Its hash preference flipped direction twice across the test, now sitting at +9 Elo for 16MB. At this magnitude, on an engine already 74+ Elo below its start rating, this reads as noise.
Two engines (Reckless, PlentyChess) show a
hash effect that got clearer and larger the longer the test ran — the
signature of a genuine effect. Pawnocchio showed what looked real
at the midpoint and it evaporated by the end — a good reminder that a
checkpoint isn't the final word. Alexandria never showed a stable
direction at all.

3. A funny footnote on the Pawnocchio tie
One thing I had to double-check before trusting it: Pawnocchio
and Pawnocchio-H32 finish the whole 300-round test at
exactly the same Live Elo, 2901.5. Not
close — identical to one decimal.
16MB: 466 wins, 530 losses, 804 draws > 868.0 points
32MB: 406 wins, 470 losses, 924 draws > 868.0 points
Two completely different score profiles (32MB draws a lot more, wins and
loses less often) landing on the exact same total. Neither version was
copied from the other — they just met the same six opponents and came
out even in two very different ways.

4. Game character: still heavily White-favored
Across all 7,200 games: White won 46.4%,
Black 6.5%, draws 47.1% —
a 7:1 ratio of White wins to Black wins,
essentially unchanged since round 100. At 9s+0.1s, Black doesn't get
enough time to fully equalize out of a sharp 6-move book before the
position — and eventually the 5-man tablebase — settles the result.

Across 7,200+ games with only 7 forfeits total and
zero illegal moves anywhere, this was a clean run — no engine had
reliability problems that could have skewed the hash comparison.

5. Curiosity: Reckless and repeated depth=1 dips
Going through a few decisive losses, one symptom kept showing up on
Reckless 0.9.0's side specifically:
  • Round 196 (vs PlentyChess) — both engines go blind together for 6 moves in a bare king+pawn ending. Looks like plain mutual time starvation.
  • Round 260 (vs Pawnocchio) — the worst case: five separate depth=1 clusters, one as early as move 37 with a nearly full board.
  • Round 265 (vs Alexandria-H32) — Reckless alone hits depth=1 in three separate bursts, one with the queen still on the board. A +5.10 > -6.17 eval swing happens inside one of them.

Round 196 looks like ordinary time pressure hitting both sides. The
other two don't fit that story as cleanly — one-sided, repeated multiple
times per game, at least one cluster well before the position
simplifies. Points less at "ran low on time near the end" and more at
something specific to how Reckless manages its clock mid-game at
9s+0.1s. Not drawing a hard conclusion from 3 games out of 7,200 — just
flagging it in case anyone testing Reckless at similar time controls has
seen the same thing.

Notable extremes
  • Longest decisive game: Pawnocchio-H32 (32MB) beat Alexandria-H32 (32MB) in a 299-ply marathon.
  • Shortest decisive game: Reckless (16MB) beat Pawnocchio (16MB) in just 44 plies.
  • Longest draw: Alexandria (16MB) vs PlentyChess (16MB) went the full 300 plies.
  • Shortest draw: Pawnocchio-H32 (32MB) vs Reckless (16MB) split the point in only 73 plies.
Average game length: 66 moves (133 plies), average duration
54 seconds per game.

Bottom line
No universal answer on hash size at UltraBullet — but a much clearer one
than at the midpoint. For Reckless and
PlentyChess, 16MB was consistently and
increasingly better than 32MB across the full 300 rounds. For
Pawnocchio, an apparent 32MB advantage at the midpoint fully
disappeared by the end. For Alexandria, the effect never
stabilized in either direction. If there's one practical takeaway:
don't trust a hash-size verdict from a mid-test checkpoint.
