No, all this time I've been talking about A/B engines that report mate scores and how they behave or misbehave.
You claimed this.

there's no possible scenario where a mate announcement that was shorter than reality made it to the root
That's a claim without content, because you just justify it by handwaving that when it's not true it's "just a bug". Look at my comments before about "just a bug".

I don't remember what we were saying in those posts, can you restate you point again?
My point is: "For A/B engines that report mates they will not report mates where the defending side could have defended better to shorten it unless there's a bug." That's as concise as I can get it.

This was not LC0's first choice (-2.36 vs -2.33 for Rfg1 and Re1) but when faced with SF's responses it again realizes that the other two choices are poor.
Ethereal 11.98 immediately hates white's position going below -2 very quickly. It found a move at depth 13 (EDIT : it's also a5) and is still sticking with it at depth 43 with an eval of -2.36 (this includes the default contempt).

I'm surprised by how low the Komodo evals are.

I see no reason to be surprised by low evaluations.
Without analysis by engines my thoughts are:
1)material is equal
2)I do not see a plan to win material or to attack the king so it may be a draw because I do not see a way to take advantage of white's weaknesses.
I guess that black is winning because I trust better engines but
the question is not for the reason that komodo's evaluation is low but for the reason that Ethereal's evaluation or stockfish's evaluation is so high.
