Re: Game 64 - Komodo goes ahead by +4 =59 -1

Post by Leo »

In the last TCEC Houdini beat out Komodo. In the time that has followed Komodo has improved while Houdini has not come out with a new version yet. If the results hold up, Komodo is the clear number 2 engine in my opinion.

GAME 65

In a Bird/Modern line, once Houdini solves the problem of its weak d-pawn, the position is drawn. Komodo leads by +4 =60 -1.

Game 66 - an interesting game, but also drawn.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 66

This game develops differently. Komodo advances a pawn to e6, which always looks vulnerable, while Houdini's bishops rake the diagonals aiming at the enemy king. The pawn on e6 predictably falls, but at the expense of ceding the bishop pair to Komodo. Komodo gains back the pawn and a drawn rook and pawn endgame soon eventuates. Komodo leads by +4 =61 -1.

Game 67 - Houdini gains an edge, but Komodo survives,

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 67

Houdini obtains a 3-1 queenside pawn majority, then immediately creates a diversion on the kingside. With a passed pawn on c5, both sides think that Houdini has a clear edge going into the endgame. Komodo has to give up a pawn, but in the rook and pawns ending, creates enough havoc with its own passed pawn to secure a draw. Komodo leads by +4 =62 -1.

Game 68 - Houdini advances kingside pawns without success

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 68

Houdini advances its pawns on the kingside, but when the pawn formations get locked up there, play switches to the queenside. Although Komodo creates a passed b-pawn, the position offers nothing to either side and the game is drawn. Komodo leads by +4 =63 -1.

Game 69 - material imbalance with big evaluation difference

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 69

Houdini's efforts on the queenside prove futile, but the ensuing tactics see a material imbalance arise where it has RBN v Q and two extra pawns. Houdini regards this as a clear edge whereas Komodo feels that it's not that big a deal. The game ends in a draw. Komodo leads by +4 =64 -1.

Game 70 - looks drawn from an early stage.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 70

It seems fairly obvious from an early stage that this game is going to be drawn, and that is indeed how it turns out. Komodo leads by +4 =65 -1.

Game 71 - Houdini plays for kingside advantage, but no joy

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 71

In a French Advance variation, Houdini starts advancing on the kingside, perhaps hoping for Komodo to castle there. However, Komodo ignores the kingside and counters on the queenside, moving its king to d7 and obtaining some activity. After the kingside locks up, Houdini tries to create an advantage down the c-file, but there is nothing there and so it forces a repetition with 37. Rxd5+. Komodo still holds a three point lead at +4 =66 -1.

Game 72 - once rooks come off, draw looks certain

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 72

Houdini again shows its penchant for kingside pawn advances, but once all the rooks come off down the open f-file, an eventual draw seems the most likely outcome. Komodo leads by +4 =67 -1.
