Game 49 - masterful play by Komodo opens up two point lead

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 49

Houdini's decision to allow a piece exchange on b3 proved to have dire consequences. We were then able to observe a masterful display from Komodo, demonstrating the power that the bishop pair can exert in shepherding a central passed pawn. Komodo opens up a two point lead at +3 =45 -1.

Game 50 - Komodo neutralises Houdini edge to draw.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 50

Houdini's more precise pawn structure gives it a middlegame edge. However, Komodo is able to hold through active play and a drawn rook and pawn ending is reached. Komodo leads by +3 =46 -1.

Game 51 - Komodo queenside play nullifies possibilities

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 51

In an Exchange Grunfeld, active queenside play from Komodo keeps Houdini's pawn centre and kingside possibilities contained. Once the queenside becomes barren, the following endgame is drawn. Komodo leads by +3 =47 -1.

Game 52 - Houdini dodges a bullet!

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 52

Houdini dodges a bullet in this game. This is a wonderful attacking game from Komodo and most certainly deserved a win. However, after giving up queen for rook and bishop, Houdini was able to set up a blockaded position and the game was drawn. Komodo leads the match by +3 =48 -1.

Game 53 - Houdini's queenside efforts thwarted on kingside

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 53

In an English Four Knights (by transposition), Houdini's queenside efforts are thwarted by Komodo's counterplay on the kingside. After the muddied waters clear, there is nothing for either side and Komodo takes a perpetual. Komodo leads by +3 =49 -1 and based on my observations of the match so far, it's a well-deserved lead.

since around 20 games or so in almost every single game you insist Houdini barely saved itself.

I have to replay the games to see if this is like that, but Komodo still leads by only a point.

btw., wonderful commentary, Graham!

First two statements are false
Third remark is true

It depends. Graham is applying human analysis...for what would like happen in an human vs human game as I see it. He's absolutely right. A human would stand a good chance of winning...say about move 34 which I am looking at now. That is to say, move master or better level players would pick White and have a much better winning percentage than black from that point.

I wonder though - and Graham would be in a good position to do this - when Komodo wins, is there an underlying reason...when it loses (or draws a better game) is there an underlying reason? Ex: misevaluation? Not seeing far enough?

Perhaps Mark or Larry would also be well qualified to comment on this as it is their baby. I haven't looked at enough games...and just use Komodo for analysis of games and my openings.

Chess programs just do not yet understand the types of positions in the endgame of game 52. In this case, a pawn protected by a bishop (which itself is protected by that pawn). And the pawn protects the other pawn. With a Rook around to harass the king, and Komodo's sole piece being the queen, then nothing can happen. I think a better material analysis in the endgame can discover that not having a minor piece to go after the opponent pawns, backed up by the queen, would have much better winning chances. Humans understand this at a glance, but computers are still lacking. Maybe something as simple as a little bonus for retaining at least one minor piece would help.
