Game 13 - interesting middlegame, but another draw.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 13

In a Catalan, Komodo initially tries to create play on the kingside, but once Houdini locks things up there, switches to the queenside. Once the c-file opens up, an interesting middlegame follows. However, although this leads to a queen and pawns ending with connected passed pawns on opposing flanks, the game ultimately ends in a further draw. Houdini holds a slender lead at +1 =12 -0.

Game 14 - Houdini equalises in the middlegame - draw.

GAME 14

Houdini equalises fairly easily in the middlegame and a perpetual check decides the result. Houdini leads by +1 =13 -0.

Game 15 - king walks from both sides, but game still drawn

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 15

In an English Four Knights (by transposition), Houdini advanced on both sides of the board, but without making any real headway. The queenside got blocked and so both engines walked their kings over there, foreshadowing the possible opening up of the kingside. Komodo opened things up to change the dynamics of the position, but still no progress could be made by either side and the game ended as a draw. Houdini leads by +1 =14 -0.

GAME 16

Komodo creates a passed a-pawn, but it is never a threat. Houdini keeps things covered on the queenside and makes sure that Komodo must also keep an eye on the kingside. Ultimately though, the game is drawn. Houdini leads by +1 =15 -0.

Game 18 - Komodo's queenside attempts come to naught. Draw.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 18

Komodo tries to create chances on the queenside, but without success. After the rooks come off along the c-file, the remaining pieces come off one by one to leave a dead drawn king and pawn ending. Houdini leads by +1 =17 -0.

Game 19 - Komodo gains the edge, but Houdini holds.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 19

In a Reti, Houdini looks for play on the queenside, while Komodo counters by trying to undermine the centre. Facing pressure down the f-file and on the weak d-pawn, Houdini gives up the exchange for an extra pawn. This strategy proves enough to hold the position and secure a draw. Houdini leads by +1 =18 -0.

Game 20 - opposite side castling, interesting king foray.

Post by Graham Banks »

GAME 20

Houdini castles on the queenside and looks to attack on the kingside. Komodo neutralises any attacking threats and exchanges queens. We then see an interesting foray by Komodo's king into the heart of the kingside, while all rooks are still on the board. Houdini manages to cope with a little bit of pressure and the game ends in a repetition. Houdini leads by +1 =19 -0.

95% draw rate at the 20 game mark. It could be a very long time before one of them gets to 6 wins
