Arasan test suite

Post by jdart »

The latest version of the Arasan test suite is available here:

http://www.arasanchess.org/testsuite.shtml

I recently added PGN and CBH formats (for use with Fritz and compatible UIs) as well as the original EPD format.

I also recently replaced one of the original arasan19 positions (#37) which had a duplicate solution, so the current version is called arasan19a.

Difficult tests. Increasing king offensive option for the side would solve more tests.
Engine D2016.1.35.366 around 2900 rating points has solved lesser than an engine with a rating of 1450 CDrill 1450.

0.5s/pos is not enough. This is way harder than something like WAC.

I usually test Arasan at 60 seconds/position. But if you are testing very strong engines you could use 10 seconds/position. Stockfish solves most of these at 10 seconds.

I recently added PGN and CBH formats (for use with Fritz and compatible UIs) as well as the original EPD format.

I also recently replaced one of the original arasan19 positions (#37) which had a duplicate solution, so the current version is called arasan19a.

Nit-pick warning! A very minor syntax issue.

Use a comma to separate operands in a list:
for example:

bm a3, e3;

3.2.4 Parameters

This parameter syntax is based on the epd opcode syntax described at 16.2.4 of
the pgn spec.

A command is followed by a single space and then either by a single operand or
by a comma separated list of operands.

I believe,

Code: Select all

bm a3 e3;
is correct. A single blank character is required, between every two adjacent operands (a3 and e3 here), have a look on the bolded part below.

Here is from PGN std.

http://opensource.apple.com//source/Che ... andard.txt
16.2.4: Operations

An EPD operation is composed of an opcode followed by zero or more operands and
is concluded by a semicolon.

Multiple operations are separated by a single space character. If there is at
least one operation present in an EPD line, it is separated from the last
(fourth) data field by a single space character.

16.2.4.1: General format

An opcode is an identifier that starts with a letter character and may be
followed by up to fourteen more characters. Each additional character may be a
letter or a digit or the underscore character.

An operand is either a set of contiguous non-white space printing characters or
a string. A string is a set of contiguous printing characters delimited by a
quote character at each end. A string value must have less than 256 bytes of
data.

If at least one operand is present in an operation, there is a single space
between the opcode and the first operand. If more than one operand is present
in an operation, there is a single blank character between every two adjacent
operands.
If there are no operands, a semicolon character is appended to the
opcode to mark the end of the operation. If any operands appear, the last
operand has an appended semicolon that marks the end of the operation.

Hi Ferdinand,

You are quoting a 1994 version of PGN Standards, and I am quoting a 2001 supplement version. I do not know if the 2001 version has been officially adopted.

The supplement is mainly about encoding of time info in the pgn, like

Code: Select all

[%clk 1:05:23]
and couple of tags still related to time.

http://www.enpassant.dk/chess/palview/enhancedpgn.htm

In that supplement, they propose a format similar to the way the epd <opcode> <operand> is being handled and when there are more than 1 operand, they propose to separate it with a comma, like the following.

Code: Select all

[%command 1:45:12,Nf6,"very interesting, but wrong"]
The operands are:
1. 1:45:12
2. Nf6
3. "very interesting, but wrong"

This comma separated operand is only applied for this supplement.

Regardless of whatever the current rule is, I personally prefer to delimit multiple "bm" operands with a comma. To me, it makes common sense to avoid the misinterpretation of the "bm" moves being successive. For example, consider this position that has mate in 5:

Code: Select all

1k6/p2q2pp/1p3p2/2pn4/3P2PP/Q1P2PK1/P3r3/6RR b - - bm Qc7+, Qd6+; ce +M5; pv Qc7+ Kh3 Nf4+ Kg3 Nh5+ Kh3 Qg3+ Rxg3 Nf4+;
Notice that the operands in the "pv" opcode do not have delimiters because the moves are successive. Since there are two ways to mate in 5, starting with Qc7+ or Qd6+, it would be, in my opinion, confusing not to delimit them with a comma. Otherwise it might be read (by someone not expert in "epd" syntax) as Qc7+ followed by Qd6+.

There are mistakes in that epd.
1. ce operand must be integer
2. When there is pv opcode it is preferable to add the pm opcode because the first move of the pv operand is the move in the pm operand. The pm opcode can only take one operand move. The bm operands generally has nothing to do with the pv operand. It is the pm opcode that has a relation to the pv opcode. In that epd, it is better to add pm Qc7+.
