You have to restart the engine, or better restart Arena.
Make a position of 5 pieces and analyze.

I have gotten it to work in Arena in UCI mode. There were a couple of UCI related problems that I needed to fix. I will get out a patch release with these after some more testing.

Arena 3.0 for Winboard compatible engines appears to work for Gaviota tablebases but I don't think it supports other tb types.

Hi Jon,
thanks for the update. No problems here with v. 19.0.1.

What means syzygy probe depth = 4?

Do I have to change it to 5 if I have e.g. 5men installed?

best wishes
Werner

SyzygyProbeDepth is the minimum depth in search at which it will probe the tablebases (except that it always probes in the top two plies).

So if you set it to zero it will probe at all non-qsearch nodes. If you set it to 4, it stops probing at depth 4, so will stop probing before the qsearch.

I don't know what the optimal value is. It probably depends on your hardware. If you have SSD for example you can probe more.

You should be able to run arasan without the .rc file. If it isn't there it will just use some internal defaults. Also currently the GUI always wins: if the GUI sends tablebase option commands they override what is in the .rc file or set internally. And some GUIs do have their own preferred defaults.

I don't know why it isn't updating the UCI default value from the .rc file. I can look into that.

I don't think you are going to see any big change by altering the SyzygyProbeDepth. In general tbs have a modest effect on playing strength, because many games are decided before they kick in, and many endgames even in TB range can be played ok using search. And then if you set a large depth it will still probe at the root and the next two plies, so it will play 6-man endgames perfectly. So to see an effect you have to be in a game where tbs are used, where search is fallible, and where some key line with tbs is only reached deep in the search.
