It would be amusing to see if some of the other greats in this list have a better fit to another program like Houdini or Komodo.

I am doing a study on Paul Morphy right now. At current depths (probably 30 plies average) there is a 55% hit rate with Stockfish move choice {at that depth}. About the same as Eichborn (but I eventually analyzed Eichborn to about 35 plies and I am not there with Morphy yet).

They may not have had the opening theory way back in the day, but some of those guys could sure make strong moves.

I will try H4 later. I will also include the average depth reached by the engine in the summary.

It is indeed interesting to see the result for those old games. Amazing games by Eichborn, I may try this one also later.

I am also concern of the time control used, I am planning of analyzing only the moves from move 12 to 40, a phase where probably most players are not too affected with time pressure granting we know the time control. Another limit to introduce is do not compare when the position is already lossing/wining by some margin say -/+ 10 pawns according to engine. For humans a +5 pawns could still be complicated although winning but requires precise move sequence. Could you suggest a reasonable margin for this?

Personally, I analyzed everything from the very first move to the last.
Some of the most amazing things were perfect moves out 20 plies or more from mate.

I have a lot of compute horsepower at my disposal (I need it too, there are more than 20,000 distinct moves made by Morphy in his recorded games).

I think that every distinct experiment can tell us something new.
I do a pass over all the positions at fast time control. This weeds out all the short mating sequences from further analysis, after I verify the moves are perfect with Chest319. Then I increase the time for the very polar positions (eg scores over 1000 centipawns) because these often quickly convert into checkmates as well. Deeper mates can be verified with ChestUCI. It only runs a single thread, but that is good and bad. It also means that you can start perhaps 12 instances on one machine with 12 cores. Many of the common positions I will already have analzyed between 35 and 50 plies so I don't really have to bother with them. But then the middle ground takes the long, slogging plow.
Sometimes, one position may take an hour to reach 35 plies because it is difficult. Multiply that by thousands and it can get to be a big task depending on how complicated the positions are. Some positions will also resolve in a minute, so you never know.

Eventually, I would like to analyze every GM move every played. Since the GMs are not likely to stop playing, I will have something to keep me busy for a long time.

The reason I start at 12th move is because I try to discount home prepared moves. It should be something that the human has spent time thinking on the position, that should be compared to the best move searched by the engine. Although there are positions before move 12 that humans were already spending time analyzing the position.
I use pgn file from TWIC and there is no time stamp on the games. It would be interesting if you know the time remaining of every position. Say once the time remaining is already low say less than 5 minutes it is not included in the calculation of matching moves, we only try to measure when the players are not time pressured.

One thing I observed is that depending on position and engine, analysis depth may take longer, of course there are engines that search deeper, why not use another condition say max time limit?

Wait... I got a a game with time stamp from chessbase this is more interesting, I will be able to calculate the remaining time per position, detecting a possible time pressure.

I saw some of his game scores in very old books. So if CB did make him up, then they also own a Tardis and are friends with Dr. Who.

We (members of the German CSS forum) had a discussion about this in 1999 or 2000 after I discovered the fishy game score of a completely unknown Eichborn
in a newly released CB database and several people asked CB about the sources and the conclusion was it was just one of CBs usual easter eggs/jokes.
IIRC those 'games' did NOT appear before a certain annual Megabase appearance.
There was no dementi and never had been shown sources. You sure noticed that all internet quotes/sources about that 'Louis Eichborn games' are all:

1. after 2005 or later
2. all citing each other

I would not be surprised if the moves after a certain opening stage match
Fritz 5 or Fritz 6 to 99% ;-)
