I have been working very hard loading and testing maybe 200 freeware engines. Some took longer to make work than others. It seems we still have some authors out there who have UCI engines, and do not realize yet that chessbase guis obey NO commands from ini, config, or rc files from within the engine folder of UCI engines. If they are winboard engines converted to UCI with the adapters- that is different. The gui will recognize those commands in that case.
Anyway, "humongous" would be the best way to describe this tournament that Denis Mendoza and I are setting up. And there will be groups set up so all engines will be within a competitive group. And a champion for each group. More details coming soon.
Best,
george

Epic. I'm already having problems in keeping ten engines in check.
Good luck with the tournament so that everything will run well. Will be interesting to see the resulting games.

Re: Coming Soon- Unbelievable Freeware Tournament(s)!!
Thanks, Tim. I already have every freeware from the top all the way down to 1800. I have not left out one version of any engine in there. Only allowing 1 version per engine. And if a commercial programmer has an earlier free version, it cannot enter. So no Houdini, Komodo or Rybka.
I will soon be posting the list of engines. I will say now there are 12 freewares that I could do nothing with. I spent at least 3 hours per engine trying. Converting winboards to UCI is not the problem- I cut my teeth on those. Here are the 12 I cannot include- they just won't work. If any of these authors want their engine in- put together an engine folder and have someone test it in Fritz 11 or Fritz 13- then let me know.

And We Have the Mega Freeware Beginning Tonight!!
A huge freeware tournament- with 14 different engine groups based as best as possible on CCRL 1CPU ratings begins tonight. There are a total of 210 engines competing, and it would have been more if I had been able to get them to install and work.
If you have a freeware engine version, and it is not included here, there can only be 4 reasons:
1. If you have a commercial engine like Houdini, Rybka, Chiron, etc.- no previous version of that engine will be allowed. Meaning no Houdini, Rybka, Chiron, etc version allowed- freeware or not.
2. Evidently not strong enough yet. I chose from CCRL's complete list- from 3250 down to 1596. I stopped when CCRL stopped.
3. I could not get an engine version to load. Most of these were early versions of fairly new engines- and I refused to spend more than 3 hours per engine trying to solve whatever the issues might be. I basically use Fritz 11 and Fritz 13 and the seasoned programmers like HG Muller and Ferdinand Mosca, John Merlino, and Daniel with Scorpio and Pedro with DanaSah long ago understood how to set their winboard engines up so adapting them to chessbase guis was easy. Perhaps some new winboard authors might want to speak with them and others and learn a couple things. And there were a number of new UCI engines that were way off. Talk to guys like Sven, Miguel, Julien, Don, Richard, Sam Hamilton, Jon Dart- and so many others- they would be happy to help.. I mean when all you give me is an exe- one file- and it won't load and play- I have no idea what you expect me to do. The other problem comes with some java engines, like Cupcake, that I just had no idea where to even start. Generally if I am not provided an excelsior jet exe- a java engine may not work on my system. (God knows I tried, Dan!)
4.A 4th and possible, but not likely, reason: I just overlooked the engine. If so, my apologies. But I swear I don't believe that happened.
Lastly, whether or not an engine was still in development or not had nothing to do with whether or not it was included. If it loaded- it played.
OK- 14 different groupings. 12 of the 14 groups have 16 engine versions. The top group has 8 versions and the bottom group has 10 versions. Nothing is perfect- but I worked really, really hard to group as best I could according to ratings.
Starting with the bottom group- Group 14- each group will play a 2-cycle round robin. When all RRs have finished, we will have 14 engines remaining.
Then we shall have in 25 game matches:
Group 1 winner v Group 1 2nd place
Group 2 winner v Group 3 winner
Group 4 winner v Group 5 winner
Group 6 winner v Group 7 winner
Group 8 winner v Group 9 winner
Group 10 winner v Group 11 winner
Group 12 winner v Group 13 winner
Group 14 winner v Group 14 2nd place
It is easy to see Group 2 cannot be expected to compete with Group 1 champion. And group 14 cannot be expected to compete with Group 13 champion. This way, every single engine has a chance to be crowned a "CHAMPION"!
And when all is said and done- we will have the "ELITE 8" freeware champions. And believe me, the winners will have battled thru more than they ever have before to get there.. They will truly be "ELITE", in my eyes.

I have tried to make the best decisions I could as to which version to use. Generally it is the latest version of the engine, and 64bit where possible. Even if the 64bit is rated lower after only getting a few games- I have to assume when the games increase- his rating will as well. In the last update one such as this went from 30 below the 32 bit version to 35 above in just 2 weeks. At any rate, I have done the best I possibly could.
Lastly, TWO HARD AND FAST RULES: 1. If the RR your engine is in has not started, I will replace it with a new version that comes out. However, if your engine's RR has begun- no changes will be made- even if said engine has played no games. 2. I will be playing the time control that adapts to the CCRL 40/40 repeating. If for whatever reason, an engine begins to lose all games on time- his opponent just receives a gift. The games will be counted!
I will have 3 cores on this Intel quad to use at once- 3 RR at a time. And I have the new XP Professional quad Misha bought for me, and can use 3 of those cores at once- if I can wade thru his jungle of programs to set things up. On my Intel, 40/40 benchmarks at 40/21 to adapt to CCRL. I have not adapted the other machine as of yet. So for the first couple of days, I will be running on this sytem only, starting with RRs for Group 13 and 14.
Make note there will be NO endgame bases of any kind used.
I hope for you to enjoy,
george

I hope for you to enjoy,
george

Re: And We Have the Mega Freeware Beginning Tonight!!
Hi George!
If I suppose that RobboLito 0.10 64-bit has the same rating as IvanHoe 46h 64-bit (it is only a supposition) then:
I hope that I copied well each rating; probabilities are rounded up to 0.01% and due to these roundings, the sum of probabilities is 99.99% instead of the correct 100%. I wrote a very short programme in Fortran for doing the calculations; the method is here, in Elo-Rating & Win-Probability section:

This tournament is a huge task! Please have patience and keep up your good work... Thank you very much and have good luck! I stay tuned.

I searched in CCRL 40/40 (where Strelka 5.5 64-bit has a rating of 3250) and I did not find Robbolito! How is it? I wanted to know the rating of each engine, for calculate the probability of each engine of win in this group and post here those probabilities, but Robbo is not there...geots wrote:Group 1

Thanks, Ray. and thanks to Jesus, Gab and Velmarin. I got every bit of elo data from CCRL, and I ran out of engines when they did.

This won't be too huge. I have plenty of cores, and anyway what better way to spend your time than for guys who work their asses off and never get the credit they deserve.
Best,
george
PS: Ray, you wanna have some fun, run Mephisto Gideon Pro in a 40/3 match against a 2275 or so engine. I was floored at its play!.
