it is a pity that the virtua engines have not been continued.

Absolutely....

I am sure that there is nowhere in mother Earth that this engine is tested nowadays in any rating list except mine....of course all the games are played manually for obvious reasons 8-)

I liked Virtua(l) too. I had three versions: DOS, Windows (I think that was Virtual II), and one for the Nintendo64 video console. The N64 version did not have much in common with the PC versions and was very bad.

The windows interface was good. I remember a unique feature: A kind of "on the fly" analysis mode during position setup. That means, the program would always analyse while you could add or remove pieces etc. If illegal (e.g. a king missing or both in check etc.), it would recognize this and simply wait until the position was (semi-)legal again. No need to leave setup mode, start analysis mode, back to setup mode, etc.etc.

I am not aware of any other chess interface having that feature.

Virtual Chess achieved the second rank in the Micro-WCCC Paris 1997, having been the only program that could win it's game against the winner: Junior. It would be interesting to see how things would have developed since then, in an alternative reality where Virtual would have won the title.

http://www.mark-weeks.com/chess/97wm$tix.htm

Very good programs and engines come and go. M-Chess comes to mind... (Micro Champion 1995).
Regards, Mike

Dr.D

Hi Mr.Doc !

First of all to present me : I'm SilvianR /Iasi/Romania/.............strasse........- an ET searched by Interpol all around the galaxy !

Some "news" about Virtual Chess 2:

1.-I have this program from many years , together with its nice original box !
2.-Publisher: Titus Interactive (Co. Ltd Inc.GmbH AG SRL........ ).
3.The autors are from France (Allons enfants de la Patrie/ Le jour de gloire est arrivé/ Contre nous de la tyrannie .............):

Mr.Marc-François Baudot & Mr.Jean-Christophe Weill

4.-Virtual Chess 2 is a derivation from two well - known chess programs :
-Cumulus (1990-Lyon ; 1991-Vancouver and 1992 -Madrid [version 2 in the 7-th WCCC - were no scandals in those times]);
-Écume (1993-München).

I have both these chess engines. Long live Ruxy !!!!!

5.Was the 5-th in the 13-th WM(icrocomputer)CCC Paderborn 1995 ( my very dear Stobor of Tom Kerrigan was only the 25-th ).
6.Was the first in the 14-th WMCCC Jakarta 1996.
7.Was the second in the 15-th WMCCC Paris 1997 (after Junior).
8.The first in the 5-th French CC campionship (1995).
9. The 13-th place in the 9-th WCCC Paderborn (1999).
10.Was in the great Aegon 1997 tournament (O tempora !).
11.1,5-0,5 versus IGM Etienne Bacrot (Cap d'Agde).
12.many ,many more....................(written in C.........).....

A great history ! A great engine !

-Cumulus (1990-Lyon ; 1991-Vancouver and 1992 -Madrid [version 2 in the 7-th WCCC - were no scandals in those times]);
