I think there were 3 different descriptions of the stall bug. One was that when in MPV analysis mode, where you analyze a position and then go back to it in MPV mode the engine would stall. Another was if you put some positions in infinite analysis, the branching factor would explode and the analysis would seem to get stuck at a certain ply. What I was most worried about though was the stall bug that would affect game play. In some positions, usually at ply 13 or more, the engine would get stuck at a certain ply and when it plays the move it plays it from a mangled hash. That was terrible, especially at longer time controls ... because you could be playing a LTC match where the depths go to ply 22 or higher ... and then the engine can generate a move which is pulled out from a corrupt hash which could be ply 12 even though it used the time of a ply 22 move. This all seemed to be fixed with 4.1, although I really did not test game play ply robustness at higher than depth 17. Since Rybka play is +3 ply, ply 17 is actually ply 20 and so hopefully this is plenty to ensure good play.

By the way, Rybka 4.1 now plays some very pretty and impressive chess. I would think that on Playchess there will be some great games as they are Ponder ON and go to higher depths. I don't think there will be change ELO wise at faster time controls, as the depths are shallow and would not have been affected by the stall bug.

In my 100 position 11x test Rybka4 solved 41 but Rybka 4.1 even 47 = more than Spark! Stunningly this old favorite is solved:

It seems to me that this bug is still present. In infinite analysis mode Rybka does not output any analysis when fed by MGV test position No 64, and it gets stuck for a very long time when fed by position No 12 (it gets to ply 29 in 9 seconds, then ponders on the solution move g4 for more than half an hour).

I am not familiar with that position, can you post it?
