Graham,
I believe you are a gentleman. We just happen to disagree on many issues.

Graham Banks says:
Come on Mr. Banks, i've noticed here, those with the most opinions often
have the fewest facts, and your optimism about the public against "these
engines" dream on Mr. Banks and remember, the place where optimism
most flourishes is the lunatic asylum.
So you think this "Poll" is representative for the whole CCC community?Graham Banks wrote:It seems that the tide of public opinion in CCC is now turning against these engines.

You'd probably know more about that than I do. Just as an aside, who is Tony Gilbert?De Vos W wrote:the place where optimism

Re: The tide is turning
At this point it seems that Vas does not intend to bring legal action against Ippo programmers ---
So why can't they reveal themselves?
Perhaps they are good programmers/hackers but not experienced chess engine programmers and cannot stand the heat of a public inquiry which would no doubt reveal that they stole code/ideas ....maybe.. ..
It could also be perfectly legal ..it just seems fishy to me.
So unfortunately i finally vote in my poll and choose option 2.
I feel that after the BB report came out the programmers should have revealed themselves if they came up with the ideas of Ippo.
By no means does this mean it is illegal software, I think everyone should be able to use it with no qualms. And certainly discussing it is no problem. As well as if anyone wants to test them ...I, myself have tested them.
It is up to Vas to provide some proof that this Ippo is rev. eng Rybka 3.
To choose option 1 means there is no doubt in your mind, option 2 allows for doubt. ...
just my take on this affair. ..

I really wish that I was a greedy capitalist!alpha123 wrote:Eh, it's quite funny anyway. Would have been even better likefrcha wrote:I can't edit my poll to remove the greedy capitalists part ....unfortunately ..alpha123 wrote:Er, I certainly wouldn't call them "Greedy Capitalists". I can see why CCRL and CEGT don't test Ippolit. I wouldn't test an anonymous engine either. They should, however, test Houdini as if it's not based on Ippo. If it was, Robert would be a lair/"legal cloner" (Ippo source is public domain). And they should probably test Fire, even though it is based on Ippo, because we have a name attached to it + Norm readily admits it comes from Ippo and has never denied it.
Ippolit family is legal, though. Dunno how moral it is to use them, since we don't really know what happened, but under the current story (Rybka was decompiled, studied a lot, and then the original IPPOLIT was created from that knowledge), I guess it's moral. It's like taking apart a Ferrari and looking at its inner workings, then building another car with those ideas.
