Do you think that you were elected as moderator to promote other forums ? I just wonder... Why didn't you wrote it initially in your moderators philosophy that you want another place ?
Greets, Thomas
As for the philosophy, just like Jeremy, I had wrote that the links to download these engines would be Ok. Now that ICD shop doesn't want it, what would you say then?
I'm not promoting the other forums. I just want to introduce the kind of things that haven't been said about new forum.
It's not like there's a competition between forums. I enjoy computer chess, and I shall say things about Rybka forum, talkchess, Open-Chess.
Is this the rule: you can mention the existence of another computer chess forum, but you cannot post any information about the features, purpose or benefits of the other forum.
Of course, the policy is to prevent people from leaving CCC and going to another forum where they may discover information about computer chess that is censored in CCC.
Go ahead, mince words ...

Okay. So you have no problem with promotion of other forums here. You were just pointing out a trivial contradiction.Albert Silver wrote:He said he wasn't promoting, and I disagreed. i certainly think the CCC is still worth fighting to keepswami wrote:Albert Silver wrote:Whatever the justifications, he is correct that you are promoting another forum. I have never given any reasons to abandon CCC. I haven't even given any "constant" updates. It's the first ever update. About the new things in Open chess that's unique like.... chess game replay.
i might join the new forum but for now am simply sitting back
a few issues for the new forum..
what makes the CCC unique is that the mods are elected by the members..no other site on the net (chess or otherwise) can make this claim
all of the other chess computer sites have mods appointed by the site owner which results in a severely limited freedom of discussion..this is perfectly understandable because the chief reason for the existence of these sites is to promote their products for sale and its either "their way or the highway" ..you know this when you sign up
here it has always been different
the sponsor took no Overlord role in the past
ever since the Ippo engine has surfaced the Sponsor has been threatened with legal action by a certain commercial entity(s)
i doubt ICD is really interested in suddenly poking their nose in here as an Overlord
i think they simply want a smooth running board that everyone enjoys visiting
i cant blame the sponsor for being concerned about these legal threats although i dont know what weight they carry(if any)
i think the Sponsor could use some good legal advise regarding this but that is a cost/benefit decision the sponsor needs to weigh..does it pay for them to defend these threats (legal costs)VS the sales resulting from hosting this board
so two questions for the fledgling site..
1)will the new site have elections for moderators after an initial start-up period ?
2) sooner or later you guys will be threatened with legal action regarding some of your topics...posts...links...etc..etc..you can Bank on it
do you have the stomach/funds to answer these threats when they surface?
Regards
Steve

Re: Open-Chess Forum
Maybe. I don't believe that elected mods ensure open discussion, as we've seen recently. That said, I like elections, and I think it's helpful for the entire community, if it has a chance to elect the sheriff itself. I am still thinking about the best way to ensure that OpenChess remains open.Steve B wrote:1)will the new site have elections for moderators after an initial start-up period ?
We don't permit illegal activity on the site. Why should we be sued? If, for instance, it becomes clear the IPPOLIT is illegal, we'd remove links from the site. This is all seriously hypothetical, though.2) sooner or later you guys will be threatened with legal action regarding some of your topics...posts...links...etc..etc..you can Bank on it

all i am suggesting is you give some thought to your response when a threat comes in..if it doessockmonkey wrote:Maybe. hopefully there will be no threat but i am guessing that in time there will be ..and you will probably be faced with the same decision that the sponsor is/was faced with
of course a threat is not the same as an actual suit..so no telling if they would carry it through
cant hurt to think about it

The only way to get closer to the truth about the source of ippo* is through open discussion. Censorship and secret forums don't promote the necessary dialogue.sockmonkey wrote:Maybe. Untrue at least for the Winboard Forum. The moderator does the job for free and the Winboard GUI is free as well.all of the other chess computer sites have mods appointed by the site owner which results in a severely limited freedom of discussion..this is perfectly understandable because the chief reason for the existence of these sites is to promote their products for sale and its either "their way or the highway" ..you know this when you sign up

this may be a problem. If moderators are elected by the
members that would be more an open forum. This issue
may require some thinking.

Hello Olivier,
So you see, now everybody knows my current salary.

I mean, no benefits even!
The issue has been raised as to whether discussions of certain types would be allowed at the Winboard Forum.
I say here that there is no kill switch as exists on some radio stations where offensive content is censored in the delay before airing.
Discuss whatever you like.
Now if we could talk about my wage demands.....
Later.

i did not say that the mods were paid on the commercial sites
i simply said they were appointed by the site owners
my guess is that hardly any of them are paid and they are probably all volunteers
