Ildtiadar 0.9a released -

My own little engine has got an important update and should finally pose at least a tiny challenge. It had troubled times where even a beginner would win as it did close to random moves, but now it plays at least a fracture of senseful chess and has, so I believe, usable time management that now understands incremental time control.

I'm still testing around with it so I might push some smaller updates without a bigger release note, but the most recent changes felt like this announcement was justified.

Changes summed up:
- There's a little bit of tactical pawn evaluation now (apart from that still not much more than raw material)
- Time management improved and should deal ok with incremental time control now
- Evaluation fixed (had major bugs in the previous versions that lead to more or less random moves)

If someone test plays it or even estimates an ELO rating (although I'm sure it would be pretty low) I'd be glad to hear about it :)

Hi ,

It keeps sending phrases like :

"Ohhh hello user! I wonder whether you're more experienced than me (I am not that much, actually). Let's play a bit of chess. Did you notice that sometimes, alcohol will improve your chances rather than lower them? Sometimes I had this impression."

They appear in annoying popups under Arena.

Any way to avoid that ?

Good luck with it anyways!

Hi Andres,

That popup was present in the previous version.
It caused time losses in Arena test tournaments.
I had to remove it.

Best,

That's actually considered a feature  I wonder why so few CECP engines actually attempt to comment on games. It's a bit sad though most GUIs implemented that feature cheaply (blocking popups and stuff) - probably the reason I never added any more messages except that one at the start.

Ildtiadar 0.9b released [Major improvement]

Ildtiadar 0.9b released!!

Changelog:
-Fixed invalid castling with king moving over threatened field
-Fixed critical bugs that eroded move generation sources in later game

This release has, apart from a castling rule issue (it would allow and do castling where the king travelled through check) this has very annoying and devastating evaluation and movegen bugs fixed that caused a corrupted internal board representation and other weird things.

Thanks to Carlos Pagador I was able to reveal both the castling issue (really thanks for that!) and those odd bugs and it plays a lot better now and I was also able to beat a weak enemy I lost against before - so check it out!

I still don't have an ELO measurement but I'm convinced it's pretty low. But now I'm more and more feeling that it should beat the most basic 2-depth searchers and get through games without crashing. If you got it to win against any engine of which you know an approximate ELO it would be nice to mention it here.
