D:\chess\WinBoard\winboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal -zp -fcp Brutus -fd "D:\chess\Brutus8XXX\x64\Release\BrutusVC.exe" -autoKibitz
This looks OK to me. Does the ICS window come up, and do you get to see the ICS login screen? I cannot check if the files are really all where you say they are. (E.g. if timeseal.exe would not be in the WB folder, that would explain it.) What WB version are you using?

Things to check are:

1) Can you reach the ICS at all, e.g. using telnet (telnet 80.100.28.169 5000).
2) If so, can you connect with WinBoard without an engine, from the command line? (type "winboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal" from the command prompt in the WinBoard folder, or even leave out the -icsheper part.)

I am using Winboard 4.3.15m ("Winboard_F"). With putty I can log in to the server without problems. When I try:

Code: Select all

winboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal
Winboard starts up and I see a login-screen (I have no knows username and password yet, could you send me some?)

When I try:

Code: Select all

D:\chess\WinBoard\winboard -ics -icshost 80.100.28.169 -icshelper timeseal -zp -fcp Brutus -fd "D:\chess\Brutus8XXX\x64\Release\BrutusVC.exe" -autoKibitz
Some windows appear but they close immediately (one command-line screen and one popupscreen). When I add -zp or -fcp, I cannot login either. I hope this info is of any help.

Best wishes,
Stephan

Well, the problem is clearly with the loading of the engine then.

On closer inspection, I see one thing that is suspicious:
As -firstDirectory (-fd) you give a path that ends in BrutusVC.exe. Now .exe is an unusual extension for a folder. Do you really have a folder BrutusVC.exe with a file Brutus (as specified by the -firstChessProgram argument) or Brutus.exe in it?

Btw, you could consider to upgrade to a more recent version of WinBoard, like 4.4.1. The one you are using does suffer from a minor bug in the error handling, which makes it crash when the engine crashes (or fails to start), so that the error popup you are supposed to get for explaining the reason for the crash does not stay up long enough to see. The winboard.zip on my website is an even more cutting-edge version.

Hi Again,

I just tried a few things, reinstalling the latest version of Winboard worked! I am capable of logging in as a guest now.

Thanx for your help HG!

Well, it seems you already have an account alled Brutus.

I can't see the password (it is encrypted in the user file), are you sure I did not send you a password before? If not, let me know, and I will give you a new password and PM it to you.

Hello,

I'm so sorry that I had to leave yesterday and I hope it did not harm the course of the tournament too much.
The result is the same because ChessMind was going to lose all games anyway. :)
