Here are the most popular of the popular positions, analyzed at great depth (one hour Rybka time on 4 CPU 3.0 GHz machine):

I am glad you find some value in it.Richard Allbert wrote:Hi Dann

I am currently analyzing the positions with increasing effort for the positions with greatest popularity.
When my first pass of analysis is done, I am going to group them into:
1. Confirmations (Rybka's analysis agrees with the most popular move)
2. Arbitrations (Rybka and the move set do not agree on the best move, but Rybka's move is a popular choice)
3. Controversies (Rybka chooses a move that is very rarely chosen)
4. Novelties (Rybka chooses a move that is not included in those chosen by the experts and by chess engines).
For groups 2,3,4 I will reanalyze at increasing depths and also by analysis of the forward positions and by examination of won/loss/drawn statistics to find out what the best move choices really are.

Dann, keep up this great work. I have not had time to use them yet, but I believe that this sort of positions are way much more useful than typical tactical sets. I am using now the previous 134 silent positions to test tree sizes. They are great.Dann Corbit wrote:I am glad you find some value in it.Richard Allbert wrote:Hi Dann

There are 493 in category arbitrations.
There are 1691 in category confirmations.
There are 478 in category controversies.
There are 142 in category novelties.
I plan to reanalyze all of the positions that are not in category confirmed at longer durations.

Re: The 2804 positions that your program must understand.
Is one hour of Rybka analysis on my machine enough? I ask because after one hour at 3 GHz x 4 threads, I still get some novelties. Are these move well know? Are they played by lesser players? Are the most frequent moves really better than these choices?

Re: The 2804 positions that your program must understand.

Fantastic collection.
Thanks!
Richard
Firstly, a disclaimer: I have nothing at all to do with programming. So I cannot say much about all this content.
I just wish you that your compilation should be a big contribution to the history of computer chess. It seems it might be, if someone can incorporate it all into an already great program. Whatever remains.
Good luck.
