List of Engines With Attractive Playing Style ;-)

Post by swami »

So, my favourite engines going by style regardless of its strength is

1. Chess Thinker or Chess System Tal

(My Favourite two engines with attractive attacking playing style)

2. Chess Tiger

(very anti-human, cunningly threatening, beware!)

3. Junior

(protect your king side from this engine, you wouldn't have a chance to see the endgame!)

4. Gandalf:

[...]

(Another attacker. This is pretty good one. though it doesn't alway go for an early attack in the middle game, but it is very agressive and has good understsanding of all strategies possible.
Never seen a unfathomable nonsense moves. Tactics is where its weakness lies.)

5. Spike (it's spike! who could resist, after all)

Honourable mention:

6. King of Kings (finest example of very computer like playing style)

7. Wchess At its own league it's pretty good at combinations.

I would like to know your list...

Thinker (Passive):

The most aggressive and strong chess engine I've ever seen (There may be more aggressive engines much weaker or more stronger engines less aggressive, so this one gets the perfect level for me.)

Hiarcs Paderborn 2007:

When it wins against other engines, it seems like a human win; it's as if Hiarcs exploited the enemy's weak point. My favorite engine from the top ones.

ProDeo:

The engine with the most easy playing style to watch. You can actually watch a ProDeo game and learn something from its wins, unlike with programs that Rybka that you may never know what happened.

Glaurung:

Latest version produces really fun games to watch. If you like watching games from engines, Glaurung is the obvious choice.

Toga 3.1.2SE JA Chekov:

Still the best Toga (or Fruit based engine) regarding playing style up to date. Sadly, newer Togas seem to have sacrificed style for playing strength, I won't blame them but when I can't see the difference in strength (unless I play several games and calculate an ELO) but the style is very obvious to my eyes, I'll always choose style, so I'll choose Toga 3.1.2SE JA Chekov as well.

Zappa Mexico (| II):

If you got a very fast hardware or the needed time for very long games, Zappa delivers. This is the dream engine that is balanced in all its ways and has a playing style that is a must see, not boring, and very strong, given enough time/hardware.

I could not dare put them a number, but Thinker is my favorite. ;)

Since I am a patzer, I like engines that doesnt give me any chance. I prefer engines that attacks relentlessly..

Thinker 5.1C
Glaurung 2.1
Romichess (goatka 1.0beta)
Porucznik3 (I love it already)
Phalanx XII (king attacks)
Horizon 4.3 (Kingattacks)
Vicki (It makes me feel like I have a chance against it)
Movei (a last minute surprise, I always seem to think that I can get a draw against this engine, but simply out plays me in the endgame)
Micromax (worlds smallest chess program, yet strong enough to defeat most humans)
Pos, CPP1, Neg3d Bigbook 3.1 (only engines that I am guaranteed a victory against)

Mi favorits engines are:
1. Hydra, well it´s no a program but when Hydra attack is almost unbeatable, I have never seen nothing that can be compared to it, this MONSTER simply destroys your castling and nothing, NOTHING seems to stop it. VERY AMAZING!!
2. Chess System Thal . This engine leaves you with out of breath, simply overwhelmed.
3. Thinker 5.1E. Fierce attacks, we could speculate on a little and say that its style is very similar to Alekhine.
4. Glaurung 2.1, just play trough this wild wild game:

Glaurung32 (2200) - TogaIIv3.1.2SE_P4_SSE2 (2800)

5. Of course Junior 7 the madness´s King, a wonderful and brilliant program, that only knows to attack in in each phase of the game and although the programs does not have feelings it seemed me to feel the fatigue of Fritz 7 when receiving attack after attack...I saw a game against Fritz 7 where Fritz even seemed tired of being attacked again and again and again until it could not be defended more.

6. Fritz 10 the king of the king´s attacks Fritz , its game is a little Bizarre, sometimes and very frequently their attacks remain in the air, but the minimal weakness in the castling is aproach to the maximum.
7. Rybka WinFinder, the most tactical and wild engine. this program seems to lack positional knowledge only looks for winning and sometimes wilds combinations.

Yes! Phalanx is my candidate for the best (not the strongest) chess program ever, and is second only to Crafty as the most influential chess program ever. Not only is it very strong and has an awesome attacking style, it was also one of the first high-quality open source programs, back in the dark ages where most programmers preferred to keep their tricks secret and progress was abysmally slow. It managed to be about as strong as contemporary versions of Crafty, while being easier to read than TSCP. It is packed with ideas which are interesting even today, eight years after the release of the last version.

Phalanx was the program that taught me most of what I know about chess programming, and those who look carefully will see that there are still some clear influences from Phalanx in my current source code.

Does anyone know what Dusan has been duing the last eight years, and if there is still hope that he will be back some day?

I am an optimist, I will hope for a newer version of Phalanx till the day I die.

I agree. I find Toga 1.2.1. on pocket grandmaster has a much more attractive playing style than Toga 3.1.2. I enjoy and learn more from the games with 1.2.1. Likewise I'm happier analyzing with 1.3.1 than with 3.1.2. on the PC. A higher rating isn't always better for analysis or playing with.

Thanks guys for so much information, I will play a game or two against Phalanx first...

Also,

Twisted Logic: Good understanding of weaknesses, weak squares, weak pawns etc, but lacks planning/strategy though.

Hamsters: Good strategic play, but lacks king side defense.

Romichess: Very positional. More of a strategical than tactical.

Bright: Good tactical, computer like style in strategy and development.

SlowChess: Good at both strategy and Combinations. Not an early attacker. Doesn't often make sacrificial moves in order to gain position/material advantage later.
